Mistakes that I make as a #ProductManagement Mentor/ Leader
Mistake #2
Setting the same mentoring/ working model for all the mentees
And not taking their strengths, development areas, working style into consideration and not adjusting the mentoring/ working model for each person differently
Wondering what would help your team be more effective? Maybe it’s time to ask them.
Today I had the opportunity today to work with a cohort of instructional coaches. We discussed what some of the barriers to effective coaching might be, and explored what possible solutions could be available.
And do you know what the common thread was among all of the barriers they mentioned?
Job description. They don’t seem to have one. Or their description is muddy, vague, or ever-changing.
While I can appreciate a “dynamic “work environment, and “all hands on deck” mentality, there is a risk to having no established markers of success.
As we at Agile Ideas Leadership like to say, if you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you’ve arrived?

DAILY MENTOR NUGGET #1093 – MAR 9, 2024 – LEADERSHIP AND LESSONS LEARNED
How often as leaders have we relearned a painful lesson or had someone else learn it because we neglected to codify it in a database or somewhere it could be easily found and reused. Lots of wasted resources and frustrated teammates are only the tip of the iceberg when this happens. This is all about process, so have good processes in place to capture, use and share lessons learned. When new initiatives or projects start, the first step should be checking the lessons learned database. If you don’t have one that is easy to use, start one and provide broad access to input and export. Make sure the lessons learned are dated too as they can get stale over time.

Mistakes I make as a #ProductManagement mentor/ leader
Mistake 6:
Giving feedback to mentees only on their areas of improvement.
And not acknowledging their strengths and recognising the consistent good work they do.
Feedback should be about strengths and development areas both.
Insight for Informed Decision Making
It’s good to talk! Even better when we listen. A mentoring role will give you the opportunity to hear other perspectives and how the organisation or an initiative might work from the viewpoint of someone you mentor. This can be eye-opening, giving you a better insight to inform your own decisions, without going full
Undercover Boss!
From the rich conversations in a mentoring relationship, you can learn to understand why people do what they do, and discover bottom-up opportunities to increase productivity, communication and processes.
Everyone wins when mentoring is done well, and as part of other development activities. It can perpetuate your positive culture as well as shed light on areas for improvement. So look out for mentoring opportunities.
