A reduction of 37% in road crash facilities alone justifies speed control. In Delhi and Gurugram, that is 670 lives saved every year.

Are city-wide speed limits really that effective? 🚗 Results from a recent study looking at 40 different cities across Europe, including Brussels, Paris, and Zurich, indicated that reductions in speed limits led to reductions in road crashes, fatalities, and injuries, emissions and noise pollution. Overall, reducing speed limits in cities can transform urban life, from improving safety to a safer and environmentally sustainable urban environment. There are a few individuals and organizations who truly strive to make the world a better place. Raahgiri Foundation & Sarika Panda Bhatt She/Her are among these select few. I had the absolute honor of visiting Sanath Road in Gurgaon this afternoon. While I’ve been seeing pictures and videos of the street over the last 6-8 months, I was not prepared for what I saw. Having observed this area on and off for the last 10+ years, I only remembered the waterlogging and traffic jams. What I saw today was the complete opposite. From keeping the community who lives and works around the area at the center of this project, using a majority of recycled and repurposed material to make the footpaths and benches, to planting native species, considering water drainage and rainwater harvesting, and ensuring existing trees were preserved and the area around them was not concretized—this may sound like the bare minimum to many of my friends and colleagues who may not be familiar with the context. But trust me when I say this, it was no easy job and required an incredible effort from all those involved. I hope those who measure the "impact" of this project can do true justice and ensure a holistic story is told about this magical transformation. A true dream turned into reality. Take a bow, Sarika Panda Bhatt She/Her and team! Proud to have supported this project via the Sustainable Mobility network (anchored by Purpose & Asar) and hope this inspires the systemic change we need in our cities across the country What do we still need to do: --> More people and organisations need to TALK about such projects and change the narrative that road widening is the one and only solution --> More corporates need to step up and support such projects --> Build large scale public movements for people and communities to own such projects. Infrastructure alone wont immediately change behaviour! (caught Sarika in action when we happened to find someone pasting posters on the newly constructed pillars and benches!!) --> Institutionalise community consultation the way Raahgiri Foundation has done in this example Raahgiri Foundation Nagarro Purpose Malvika M Harpreet Bagga Rhea Karan Saudamini Zutshi Keerti Bhandary Komal Chaudhry Kanishk Kabiraj Mrinalini Ray Mehta Swati Batra Gurpriya Singh Safetipin Young Leaders for Active Citizenship (YLAC) Compartment S4 Sensing Local Janaagraha BYCS C40 Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies Porticus Aslihan Tumer Sanjiv Gopal Siddharth Sreenivas Nidhi Batra

Dislike the sight of piles of construction debris by the side of the road? So do we! In constructing Sanath Road, Gurugram's first model street, we reused over 11,000 tons of construction and demolition (C&D) waste.  📐8900 tons for pathway & cycle track basework 📐1900 tons for for seating and planters 📐900 tons for edges, walls and channels, etc. Along with attention to #equity, #biodiversity, dignity, #SustainableMobility, safety, water management, C&D waste reuse is one more way to ensure that we redevelop streets to reflect the needs of our time. #StreetsforAll #SanathRoad #Raahgiri #Gurugram #AirPollution  GMDA (Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority) Municipal Corporation of Gurugram Nagarro Manas Human Sarika Panda Bhatt She/Her Safetipin Beyond Built Maruti Suzuki India Limited Vinod Sood Manu Dangi

Of all the fun we have and the work we do, we are soberly mindful of our True North - saving lives that would be mindlessly, tragically lost due to poor road design. For the past two years, we have been working with GMDA (Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority), Nagarro, Egon Z., Hughes Systique Corporation (HSC) to redesign 14 of the most dangerous intersections (blackspots) and rectify four of them. It gives us so much gratification to present the initial results. * 50% reduction in fatalities and 47% reduction in serious injuries at IFFCO chowk * 50% reduction in fatalities at IMT Manesar and 50% reduction in serious injuries. Statistics that represent lives that are deeply valued by their families. We simply cannot afford to not do this. When it comes to fatalities and serious injuries, the only number to aim for is ZERO. We're looking forward to seeing this in Gurugram and all over. Using the latest available data, the report highlights both successes and challenges as the international community strives to fully realize the ambitions and principles of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. 𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩-𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘢, 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯'𝘵 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘳 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨. 🚨 The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2024 reveals alarming trends: -Only 17% of targets will be achieved by 2030. -Nearly half show moderate to severe deviations. -18% are stagnating, and 17% are regressing. 📉 Data gaps persist, particularly in priority areas like gender equality, climate action, and strong institutions. We lack recent data for many targets, making it difficult for policymakers to make informed decisions. 🌐 Data from traditional sources like censuses, surveys, and registrations are essential but insufficient. Innovative data sources are needed. Examples of innovation: Azerbaijan: Remote sensing for biodiversity Colombia & Malaysia: Integrating geospatial data Bangladesh: Local poverty estimates 🌍 Building a strong statistical foundation requires: -Investment in national statistical systems -Modernizing infrastructure -Adopting international standards -Enhancing data quality and timeliness 🤝 Partnerships are key to inclusive data. NSOs must collaborate with the public sector, international organizations, academia, the private sector, and civil society to ensure comprehensive and context-specific data collection. 👫 Engaging citizens in data production is essential to leave no one behind. Citizen-generated data can highlight intersectional disadvantages and ensure that policies address the needs of marginalized groups. 💡 Open data has improved, but its use and impact need more work. Effective data stewardship, privacy, and security are crucial. NSOs must lead in data sharing and reuse while fostering trust in national statistics. 🆘 Coordinated efforts can close funding gaps and boost national statistical capacity.
