On the second day of our joint training program with the MCGM Centre for Municipal Capacity Building and Research (MCMCR) on "Electrical Fire Safety - Protecting Lives & Property," we addressed critical subjects of Fire Safety and First Aid. The day included interactive sessions with practical demonstrations and hands-on training. Highlights from the dynamic workshop on 'Water Security in India: Strategies for Small and Medium Towns', jointly organized by MHT, Amalner Nagarpalika, and the Center for Water and Sanitation (CWAS), CRDF, CEPT University at MCMCR (MCGM Centre for Municipal Capacity Building and Research), Powai, Mumbai. Bijal Brahmbhatt, Director of MHT, emphasized on the imminent water crisis, citing Niti Aayog's report on 21 water-starved Indian cities. While India has predominantly focused on rural water issues, the complexities of urban areas, marked by high population density and limited space, necessitate attention. Metro cities possess resources, but small and medium cities lack funds and technical expertise, adversely affecting residents' quality of life. MHT engages at grassroots levels, empowering women as leaders to bring forward local issues to the knowledge of their city government. Despite developing a sustainability plan for Amalner, financial constraints persist. Urban challenges stem from an overburdened Ministry managing various departments, hindering dedicated support. The workshop aims to address these issues for small and medium towns. In a captivating keynote address, Dr. Ramanath Jha, the Director General of MCMR and a distinguished retired I.A.S. officer, shared valuable insights on water security in India, drawing on his extensive experience in public administration. He emphasized the pressing relevance of the chosen topic—city-level water resilience—for both the present and the future. Highlighting the accelerated urbanization in India, he discussed historical urbanization trends, including China's strategic shift towards urbanization for economic growth. Dr. Jha called for a nuanced approach to governance, addressing the complex nature of cities and their role in national GDP. He stressed the need for a unified climate action plan, debunked financial assistance myths, and advocated for citizen involvement to promote environmentally responsible behavior. Expressing concerns about the uneven growth of big cities, he proposed a blueprint for decentralizing powers to ensure sustainable decision-making at the local level, anticipating challenges for urban sustainability amid population growth and migration. The Panel discussion, included perspectives from diverse participants, including government officials, academia technologists, NGOs, and grassroots leaders focused on 'Water Issues & Solutions in Small Cities', 'Technology Interventions for Cities' and 'Building Water Resilience with Communities'.
