Meet Monika Ben living in Vishwanagar slum, #Ahmedabad for 20 years. Monika Ben has found relief from #extremeheat with a simple yet effective solution. After applying solar-reflective white paint to her tin-sheet roof, she now enjoys a cooler and more comfortable home environment. What was once a suffocating space is now comfortable, allowing her to sleep in the afternoon and work on her stitching projects throughout the day. No longer needing a cooler, Monika Ben is thrilled with the transformation and has even recommended this change to her mother-in-law. A small change with a big impact—Monika Ben’s story highlights how innovative solutions can improve daily life. With the support of S&P Global, MHT is facilitating the painting of over 600 roofs across six slums in Ahmedabad with solar-reflective white paint. This initiative aims to provide residents with a more comfortable indoor environment during the intense summer heat, improving their health and well-being. Climate change and urbanization significantly impact small and medium-sized cities in India, such as #Patan, intensifying vulnerabilities and inequalities. Urban poor women in Patan are particularly at risk due to limited resources, knowledge, and participation in decision-making processes. Their awareness of climate variability and mitigation strategies is low, making them more susceptible to climate change-induced hazards like #extremeheat, #waterscarcity, and #flooding. To address these challenges, MHT team is using engaging videos to raise awareness about climate change and inspire sustainable action, aiming to make the issue more tangible and relatable to the community members. The Climate Smart Patan Initiative by MHT, supported by Tata Trusts, implements gender-responsive interventions to empower these women, enhance their knowledge, and ensure their voices are heard in policy discussions. Ensuring Water Resilience in #Amalner! Amalner has faced a persistent water crisis, severely impacting its vulnerable slum communities. Recognizing the urgent need for action, MHT is committed to addressing this critical issue. The vulnerable communities are most affected due to open defecation and water scarcity. MHT has already implemented the ‘Making Amalner Open Defecation Free’ programme. To sustain the open defecation free (ODF) status of Amalner city and improve water resilience among poor communities, it was imperative to prepare a slum water resilience plan. Supported by HSBC, MHT remains dedicated to enhancing water access and sustainability in 12 slums of Amalner city.
