Mangroves - A Lifeline for Biodiversity and Climate 🌿 Did you know that mangroves are also called ‘blue forests’? These amazing wetland ecosystems are home to salt-tolerant trees and shrubs that play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and resilience along our coastline. On today’s #InternationalMangroveDay, we take a closer look at these extraordinary ecosystems. Learn in the visuals below why #mangroves matter 👇. Together with our partners, we are committed to preserving these vital ecosystems that contribute to the wellbeing, food security and protection of coastal communities worldwide. With our joint efforts, we make a difference: 🌊 More than 700 families in the Bhitarkanika and Point Calimere coastal regions have benefited from alternative, sustainable livelihood opportunities, including mangrove rehabilitation, horticulture, floriculture, sustainable fisheries, organic farming, handicrafts with local Nalia grass, and birdwatching guide training as part of our post-pandemic #GreenRecovery measures. 🐠 Over 124 ponds and 35 fishing canals covering an area of 20.5 hectares have been restored and over 7.2 hectares of mangroves have been rehabilitated in the Bhitarkanika and Point Calimere Ramsar Sites. 👨🌾 More than 30 tourism operators in Bhitarkanika were trained in nature guide and facilitation skills. 📣 Over 800 students and teachers have been reached through awareness-raising campaigns on the conflict between humans and saltwater crocodiles in Bhitarkanika. There is more to come: In future, we will strengthen regional cooperation and financing models for transboundary protected area management in the #Sundarbans. The Sundarbans are the world’s largest mangrove forest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spanning over 10,000 square kilometres across Bangladesh and India. This initiative will contribute to conserving its rich biodiversity, and connectivity of ecosystems, thereby reducing existential risks and enhancing climate resilience of resource-dependent inhabitants. 🤝 Our efforts contribute to the conservation of India’s rich #biodiversity, which is one of the priority areas of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (#GSDP) between #India and #Germany. Promoting Agroecology: Assam Reinforces Sustainable Practices 🌱 Agroecological transformation represents a promising shift towards more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems that benefit both people and the environment. One important element is farming practices in which farmers use their agricultural waste and resources as bio inputs. This contributes significantly to building a sustainable agricultural ecosystem. To drive this shift, we have joined hands with PwC, Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and Grameen Sahara to organise a field visit to #Assam. The excursion aimed at fostering knowledge exchange, discussing lessons learnt and best practices on successful sustainable agroecological approaches that are applied in the state. The delegation interacted with women farmers from Kahua, Kamrup. During the visit to the sustainably managed farms, the team learnt about various agroecological practices. These practices include straw mulching, raised beds and nurseries, compost heaps and pits, live mulching with sweet potatoes, seed treatments, bio-pest repellents, seed bombs and low-cost biochar made from bamboo. Key takeaways of the field visit: 🌻 The reuse and recycling of agricultural waste and resources provides farmers with effective bio inputs and reduce dependency on the external market. 🌻 Smallholder farmers in the Kamrup district of Assam effectively adopt low-cost practices such as vermicompost, liquid compost and bamboo biochar, which they make from their farm waste. This can serve as a best practice example for other farmers. 🌻 More farmers are moving towards agroecological farming given the local resources available. This trend is highly promising and must be further encouraged and expanded. By promoting agroecological transformation processes in India's agricultural and food systems, our joint efforts also contribute to the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (#GSDP) between #India and #Germany, which declares #agroecology as priority area of bilateral cooperation. Drink from Tap – Ensuring safe and clean water for all 🚰 A glass of water straight from the tap to quench your thirst in the summer heat? In many parts of India, this is still a dream of the future. To realise this vision, the ‘Drink from Tap’ initiative is being piloted in several cities, aiming to provide potable water directly from household taps. While progress is being made, challenges such as upgrading infrastructure, ensuring consistent water quality, and widespread implementation remain. Efforts continue to expand the initiative to more regions, improving access to safe drinking water for millions. To further drive those efforts, the Central Public Health & Environmental Engineering Organisation hosted the ‘National Workshop on Drink from Tap’. An important milestone was the launch of the revised manual on ‘Water Supply and Treatment Systems (Drink from Tap), March 2024’, which we jointly developed with our partners. The manual serves as a valuable guide for the efficient planning, implementation and management of water supply systems with Drink from Tap facilities. It was prepared through a co-creation process that included a series of national and regional workshops on 24/7 water supply. Key takeaways of the event: 💧 Scope: Implementing the manual in at least one ward or one district metering areas in all 500 selected cities. 💧 Vulnerable populations such as the urban poor need to be included to achieve greater outreach. 💧 The implementation of the manual requires the engagement of young experts, especially women engineers and professionals, to achieve a faster transition to the Drink from Tab methodology. Together with our partners, we are committed to co-create innovative solutions for sustainable urban development, which is a priority area of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership between #India and #Germany. Translating Science into Local Adaptation Action for Climate Resilience 🌿 Although substantial progress has been made in assessing climate risk, there is still a gap in applying this knowledge to practical, locally led efforts. To bridge this gap, we collaborated with Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee to host the ‘Expert Dialogue on Synergies in Climate Risk Assessment’. The event unified academicians, scientists, financiers, and practitioners, with the goal of promoting collaboration and cross-learning on climate risk-informed Locally Led Adaptation (LLA). Event Highlights: 💡 Technical Presentations and Expert Talks: Experts shared tools and methodologies for climate risk assessment and analysis, guiding informed local decision-making.  💡 Interactive Group Work: A hands-on group activity focused on co-designing a roadmap for sustainable and scalable adaptation solutions. Key Takeaways: 🌱 Successful adaptation requires solutions designed by and for the community, ensuring social receptivity. 🌱A common language among scientists, practitioners, and local communities is essential for a shared understanding of adaptation measures. 🌱 Quantification of damages and economic losses is critical to enhance decision-making processes at local level. 🌱 Customised capacity development programmes on climate resilience need to address the unique needs of various vulnerable groups. 🌱 Focus needs to be placed on scalability and bankability of solutions by assessing their ease of implementation and effectiveness. This workshop is a steppingstone towards fostering cooperation among diverse stakeholders for effective adaptation measures. It emphasises the importance of unified approaches over traditional siloed methods. Through our collaborative efforts we are committed to tackle India’s climate change challenges which has been declared a priority area of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership between #India and #Germany. Together, we can turn climate risk knowledge into local action for a climate resilient future! 💪🌦️ Learn more about our project activities: https://lnkd.in/gWh6aq6H Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Government of India Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH NABARD - National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development Department of HSS - IIT Tirupati Indian Institute for Human Settlements Anna University Chennai Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), Lucknow Doon University, Dehradun MS Swaminathan Research Foundation Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group (GEAG) DeHaat Bankers Institute of Rural Development (BIRD) Lucknow International Water Management Institute (IWMI) BAIF Development Research Foundation Climate Asia ODI

𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 – 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 👕 🔄 The textile industry is crucial to the global economy. However, its environmental impact is under scrutiny due to massive resource depletion and improper textile waste management. In India alone, 8 million tonnes of textile waste are generated annually which end up incinerated or dumped in landfills. The silver lining? Revolutionary approaches are emerging to reduce and recover textile waste, incorporating the informal sector and creating systemic solutions. This kind of a transition ensures environmental, social, and economic benefits by reclaiming the value of underutilised textile waste. To drive this change, we have teamed up with Saahas Zero Waste to organise the networking event ‘Stitching Sustainability - Change with Every Thread’. The event brought together key industry leaders, innovators, informal sector workers and policy makers for insightful discussions that emphasised the importance of public-private partnerships to promote a circular value chain for textile waste in India. The key takeaways of the event: 🧵 Collaboration is key: Establishing strong partnerships between different stakeholders, including government agencies, the private sector and informal workers, is crucial for the sustainable management of textile waste. 🧵 Policy support: Developing comprehensive policies to promote circularity, including Extended Producer Responsibility (#EPR) tailored to the textile sector, is essential for ensuring the long-term financing, accountability and sustainability of textile waste management systems. 🧵 Technology, innovation and markets: Advancements in sorting technology and recycling processes, as well as the creation of markets for recycled and upcycled goods, are critical to improving the quality of recycled textiles and recovering resources from all types of textile waste. 🧵 Involvement of informal workers: Involving informal waste workers in decision-making processes and ensuring their access to financial and market resources is necessary for a truly inclusive waste management system. 🧵 Local solutions: Tailoring solutions to local conditions and ensuring financial viability are key for the success and longevity of textile waste management projects. Together with our partners, we are committed to co-create innovative solutions towards #CircularEconomy, which is a priority area of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (#GSDP) between #India and #Germany.
