Across roads, greenways, national cycle network, light rail and metro – we keep Ireland moving
About us
Transport Infrastructure Ireland's role as a state agency is to provide sustainable transport infrastructure and services, deliver a better quality of life, support economic growth, and respect the environment. Under the aegis of the Department of Transport, we work at both national and regional level, in partnership with Local Authorities regarding national roads and greenways, and the National Transport Authority (NTA) regarding light rail and metro. TII was established through a merger of the National Roads Authority (NRA) and the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) under the Roads Act 2015, and was set up to deliver and operate safe and efficient light rail and national road networks. In 2021, TII was delegated additional functions in relation to active travel. We are leading the development of an ambitions new National Cycle Network for Ireland on behalf of the Department of Transport. At TII we are building a more sustainable economy and a better quality of life for everyone. The results of the Macroom Bypass Evaluations have been published by TII. Read more about the key findings and link to the full report in Kelly McCarthy, Senior Transport Planner at TII's post below 👇
Findings are out! Following the opening of the N22 Macroom bypass: - Traffic is down 40%, and medium and heavy goods vehicles down 60% - Footfall is up >25% and visitors are reporting that they are visiting more often – Macroom without heavy traffic is now a more pleasant place to visit and spend time - 12 business owners reported positive or very positive impacts from the bypass on their business, 12 reported no impact, and only one negatively impacted - Businesses are overall happy with removal of the traffic - More children are walking to school - Noise levels are substantially down Loads more in the report! We’ve spent the past two+ years collecting and analysing a vast set of pre-bypass and post-bypass opening data, with the help of Cork County Council. Importantly, we also found no notable increase in cycling, and indications of some induced local traffic into the town – both things to monitor going forward. At TII, the development of sustainable communities is a key objective across all our transport infrastructure projects. As we continue to celebrate Luas20, we're highlighting its role in the creation of the Cherrywood Strategic Development Zone (SDZ). - The extension of the Green Line to Brides Glen is supporting the delivery of new development in the Cherrywood (SDZ), one of the largest planned urban developments in Ireland. - Luas provides critical transport infrastructure that is supporting the delivery of thousands of new homes and jobs, as well as new supporting infrastructure in the SDZ. Four Luas stops currently serve the SDZ, with a further stop at Brennanstown to be opened once new development is completed. - Luas is an intrinsic part of the development, and its provision has ensured that the new community is served by high-quality and reliable public transport which enables residents to make sustainable travel choices from the outset. Today to celebrate World Health Day, we reflect on the vital role safe and efficient transport infrastructure plays in promoting public health and well-being. Towns, villages and cities across the country have become safer and more accessible for more sustainable modes of transport through improvements to the road network, the development of greenways and the provision of public transport. Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) along with the National Transport Authority, Transdev Ireland and partners celebrated 20 years of Luas at St Stephen’s Green today. Luas is a high capacity, efficient, zero emission means of urban transport and has had a hugely positive impact on Dublin. Minster for Transport Eamon Ryan TD Department of Transport gave a speech on the impact of the Luas in its first 20 years and cut a Luas themed birthday cake alongside two of the first Luas tram drivers. It was great to see so many people turn out for the event which included the 20th anniversary Luas tram design, a children’s art competition and a performance by the Kingswood Community Group Choir.
