The prevalence rate of HIV in Uganda is between 5-6% and is a significant driver of poverty within a household, if family members are not accessing care and treatment. Accessing care and treatment can however lead to viral suppression and enable people to lead healthy lives, go to school and/or earn a living. About us
Nurture Africa is an Irish-founded, international non-governmental organisation established in 2003. Through implementation of a holistic "family-centred" approach, Nurture Africa supports families in Uganda with access to healthcare (specifically HIV treatment and care, primary healthcare and maternal healthcare), education (both formal and vocational), child rights and income generation through business training and mirco-finance loans in order to evelate them sustainably out of poverty. Nurture Africa also works within the humanitarian sector, supporting South Sudanese refugees living within UN displacement camps in Northern Uganda by providing children and youth with access to both formal and non-formal education and training in the rights of the child. We facilitate specialised volunteer opportunities on our established volunteer programme for healthcare, teaching and Professional Skill volunteer's. Our continuous link with these communities enables Nurture Africa supporters and volunteers to make a lasting difference. Participants on our volunteer programme have the opportunity to visit a family (by invitation) who are supported with care and treatment on our HIV programme. MaryKate agreed to share her experience of what is, the most emotive activity on our volunteer programme. Out of respect for the families, they are not captured in this footage and Nurture Africa's Senior Counsellor, Maureen Bonabana, who facilitates the visit, is visible in the background #uganda #volunteer #hiv
