Founded in 2009, First Fortnight is a charity that challenges mental health prejudice through arts and cultural action.
Through our annual arts festival held across the first two weeks of January we aim to make the beginning of each year synonymous with mental health awareness, challenging prejudice and ending stigma.
Through our Centre for Creative Therapies and CACtus (Child and Adolescent Creative Therapy Service) we provide the highest standard of free Creative Therapies, art therapy, music therapy and drama therapy to children, adolescents and adults experiencing homelessness and members of vulnerable communities who are at risk.

Why is Mental Health Awareness So Important? 🧠
Mental health is a crucial aspect of our overall well-being, yet it often doesn't receive the attention it deserves. By participating in the National Poster Competition for World Mental Health Day 2024, you can play a vital role in changing that.
Here’s why mental health awareness matters:
➡ Breaking the Stigma: Talking openly about mental health helps to reduce the stigma and discrimination that many people face. When we share our experiences and support one another, we create a more inclusive and understanding society.
➡Promoting Early Intervention: Awareness encourages people to seek help early, which can lead to better outcomes. Early intervention can prevent mental health issues from becoming more severe and difficult to manage.
➡Educating People: By raising awareness, we educate people about the signs and symptoms of mental health issues, and the importance of seeking help. Knowledge empowers individuals to take action for themselves and others.
➡Supporting Each Other: When we understand mental health, we can better support our friends, family, and colleagues. This creates a stronger, more compassionate community.
Join us in this important cause by submitting your poster design. Your artwork can bring public voices into this vital conversation and create a lasting impact.

‘Safe Harbour’ is a new, free illustrated storybook that will support children who have been bereaved by suicide. It has been developed to empower parents and carers to have difficult conversations safely with their children around this sensitive topic.
"We have never had a resource like this for parents before. What this book and the accompanying guide does, is give parents a language to talk about suicide with a child. Suicide is a major public health issue and each suicide directly affects many people, their families and communities," - Mary Butler TD, Minister for Mental Health and Older Persons.

We're seeking an increase in Arts Council funding to €160m in #Budget2025 to support the needs of the arts sector at a time of:
🔹 Record demand for our supports
🔹 Record shortfall in funding requests met
🔹 Escalating costs for artists and arts organisations
There has been strong government investment in the arts but further infrastructural support is needed to deliver the best return on this investment, and to maximise opportunities for artists and audiences.

Rethink Ireland have reached the milestone of becoming a €100 million Fund for social innovation, and through the work of our awardees, we have impacted over one million people in Ireland 🌟
Together, we are #OneMillionStrong, and one of our awardees who have played a part in this is ShoutOut . They do amazing work to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ people by sharing personal stories and running educational programmes
Despite positive #socialchange in society in the past years, young people are still facing homophobic and transphobic violence, bullying and isolation. ShoutOut’s educational workshops in schools and youth groups directly tackle harmful attitudes towards the #LGBTQ+ community and promote allyship, empowering students to act as advocates in their communities.
Hear their Executive Director Ruadhán Ó., explain what the support from the HeadStart Fund has meant for their organisation 👇
"We can now reach any school that needs us, no matter how big or small, no matter how rurally located, or how large a town or a city. We now don't have to say no to any school because of capacity"
Kudos to the rest of the awardees of the HeadStart Fund, who as Ruadhán mentions, are all doing impactful work across the country for young people to bolster their mental health outcomes 🙌
The HeadStart Fund is a three-year, €3M Fund created by Rethink Ireland in collaboration with the Z Zurich Foundation , Zurich Ireland and Health Service Executive. It supports initiatives offering early interventions, well-being and resilience programmes, and other mental health supports, to young people in #Ireland.

The Dublin Region Homeless Executive is provided by Dublin City Council as the lead statutory local authority in the response to homelessness in Dublin and adopts a shared service approach across South Dublin County Council, Fingal County Council and Dún Laoghaire- Rathdown County Council.
We established the Pathway Accommodation and Support System (PASS), which is an online system that generates vital information in terms of managing access to accommodation. The system provides ‘real-time’ information in terms of homeless presentation and bed occupancy across the Dublin region. PASS is the primary source for homeless data in the state. We provide the placement service for all persons in emergency accommodation.
We have recently automated our monthly reports to reduce human error and better utilise resources and staff time. You can see our reports here: https://lnkd.in/ezzkXKrm#YourCouncilDay

First Fortnight recognises the research from the pilot study demonstrating the positive impact of Basic Income for the Arts (BIA) on the mental health of artists.

The latest research on the Basic Income for Arts pilot scheme confirms its beneficial effects on artists receiving the weekly BIA payments. One year into the pilot, the findings show a consistent, positive impact on nearly all indicators, including practice development, sectoral retention, and well-being.
The BIA payments have also reduced deprivation rates among recipients. Artists receiving the basic income are dedicating more time to their art each week, spending less time working in other sectors, and are more likely to sustain themselves through their art alone. Additionally, they are experiencing less depression and anxiety.
