As the thermometer rises in the northern hemisphere 📈 our study of six Southeast Asian countries found they are saturated with low-efficiency room air conditioners (ACs), produced by multinational companies that build high-efficiency models for other, protected markets. If these countries – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam – put an end to the dumping of inefficient ACs, it could save USD $148 billion in consumers’ electricity bills and protect our climate! Due to rising temperatures and growing economies, demand for Air Conditioners (ACs) in Southeast Asia will continue to surge. In Indonesia, CLASP’s Kynan Tjandaputra emphasized why it’s important to improve consumer awareness about appliance energy labels on a talk show hosted by KBR, and Yayasan Lembaga Konsumen Indonesia (YLKI). Appliance efficiency labels promote the purchase of energy-efficient models that, despite higher initial costs, offer significant long-term financial savings. CLASP’s research shows how improving the efficiency of ACs in the region can reduce a billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions over 25 years, and slash consumers energy bills. Heat pumps heat and cool buildings using surrounding air, making them one of the most environmentally friendly and affordable climate solutions. CLASP is proud to support the Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP) and Global Buildings Performance Network (GBPN) in developing a policy toolkit to help governments deploy more heat pumps worldwide. In Brazil, improving access to efficient appliances is critical to addressing inequalities in basic energy services and food security. Making appliances like refrigerators more efficient through policy nudges means more affordable, efficient models are used in homes across the country. This reduces the cost of operating appliances while raising the quality of life for all Brazilians. In a recent series of field tests in Rwanda, we found that energy-efficient appliances and technologies cost less to operate than fossil fuel equivalents and produce less pollution: https://lnkd.in/gDq36EJU As more off-grid and weak-grid appliances and products come on the market over the last two decades, CLASP has carried out extensive field testing to help consumers, distributors, and governments make sound decisions about which models to invest in. This project was conducted by CLASP and EED Advisory with the support of Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and the The World Bank. The appliances tested were electric pressure cookers, electric motorbikes, solar water pumps, and solar-powered fridges. #ForPeopleForPlanet
