During my second semester of freshman year in college at NYU Stern, I was put on academic probation. I managed to pull a GPA under 1.0. It was a combination of too much partying and way too much ego that these four classes I was taking were “easy.” It took me the remaining three years of college to make up my grades to just barely graduate on time. This “failure" left quite the imprint on me. That mistakes can be corrected, but not overnight. That change and transformation take time. And that humility, hard work, and confidence have to work together. I share this because research shows 81% of women feel more pressure not to fail than men and the systemic notion that while men are raised from childhood to be brave, girls are raised to be perfect. I’m partnering with L’Oréal to share my story of the failures and my deep belief that failures are a critical component of successful careers. Nearly 10 years later, I graduated with an MBA from NYU Stern (they actually let me back in!!) and my education has been a cornerstone of my career. Exactly as my Tawianese parents said it would be. In fact, this week, I’m heading to both NYU and Columbia to do fireside chats with Young Mi Park.
