Hotel's Favourite
A small family-run hotel, very pleasant.
Ideal for those looking for peace and quiet. It's located in a higher part of Calheta, so you'll need a car.
Our room was spacious, with a bathroom with a double sink and beautiful tiles around the mirror. There was a window right next to the bath. Taking a relaxing bath with a view is something...
Our room also had a small patio with sun loungers, a table and two chairs.
The place is very sunny and in the middle of nature, so don't leave the doors open too long, as friendly lagartixa make themselves at home.
Breakfast is rich and varied, with lots of homemade products. You can sit on the small patio overlooking the pool and the ocean while the morning sun warms you up.
The pool was enough and always clean.
All the staff were friendly and ready to help. We recommend this hotel!

Luxurious comfort off the beaten track. We didn’t realize when we booked it that it wasn’t in Calheta, but it didn’t matter. We had a patio a view, double sinks in the bathroom, an abundant breakfast included, and an excellent restaurant to dine in at night. Then warned us before we arrived that most guests rented cars, but we went ahead with taxis and walking, and made out alright. The front desk us connected with a driver who took us all around the north coast and dropped us off at an excellent Levada walk, so the lack of a car did not minimize our enjoyment. The dinners were excellent for a hotel and reasonable, including a chestnut soup one night and a perfect medium rare espetada (grilled meat on a skewer) one night. Unexpected but well appreciated luxury.

It deserves a 10 for perfect combination of peace and quiet and gracious staff. Helpful but not intrusive. Welcoming. Interested and interesting. And they have a massage therapist available at a very reduced rate. And sauna too!

Biggest surprise was the restaurant. Breakfast was healthy, fresh varied. I had to skip my favorite chocolate croissant a few mornings to have room for other delights , like big bowl of fresh fruit salad. I thought we would go into Calheta town for most dinners but ended up eating here because it was better than many restaurants, and food and wine very reasonably priced. No reason to go out. Stay there and enjoy a relaxing evening.
An added bonus was when Cyrano, the resident cat, came into our room and spent the night with us. I woke up to him curled around my feet!

The grounds are lovely and so diverse. I think just about anything will grow here. We enjoyed watching the birds and the two cows across the ravine. No city noise! Great morning sun to have breakfast on the terrace every morning in December!

Wish I had failed my Covid test so that I could have stayed another two weeks. Would be happy here for months.

Great small-scale family owned hotel with excellent personnel. The rooms are primarily located in small buildings scattered in the lush garden, each with an own private outdoor area. The restaurant offers a high quality kitchen and its personnel is excellent, with eye for detail. If you want a peaceful retreat after having been outdoors during the day, this is definitely the place!

Coped really well with the COVID measurements, and we were allowed to go anywhere after getting a negative test. The setting is simply stunning, the pool is great, and the surroundings are beautiful! As we would eat outside, there would be paths going right down to the valleys and beaches.
Not loud at all, peaceful and friendly. The hotel cat was especially welcoming. :)

Beautiful surroundings, relaxed setting, excellent food, (even the picnic breakfasts for our early starts, and catering for a gluten intolerant guest with home baked GF bread), extremely helpful and friendly staff, comfortable room (& bed!), nature friendly with high ‘green’ Eco credentials, away from the crowds, very good value for money spent. We could not have asked for more. Yes it is about 45 minutes by car from Funchal but that was a plus point for us. We hired a car and it was relatively easy to find. We found having a car meant we were free to go where we pleased, when we pleased, but I gather the taxi drivers of Madeira are very accommodating. We definitely want to return to Hotel Atrio!

A very clean and extremely well located hotel with amazing views, particularly from the lodges. Excellent breakfast too. During our stay, we felt the dinner did not in any way match the rest, both in ambience and food quality. Perhaps we hit a bad week?

Atrio is a quiet, sweet little hotel with decent rooms and stunning views. The restaurant has largely decent food. But the lunch and dinner menu is the same and didn't change during our 7 day stay. It is not the largest menu hence it got quite limiting quickly. Staff were friendly and very cordial. This hotel is ideal for people who want to explore the numerous walks of Madeira. It is bit of a drive to the capital so in bad weather it takes creativity to entertain your family, there is not much to do around Calheta if the sun is not performing. Shame the water in the pool was freezing, it was colder then the sea. Otherwise it is a great place to stay.

The Garden Swimming pool The hotel Atrio owns a 4x12 m swimming pool which is heated up to 21ºC. The water is treated by electrolyse which gives a clean but smooth water. The swimming pool is set in a 12.000 m2 garden with sea view. Sun beds, cushions, towels for the swimming pool are free. Patio The heart of the hotel is made of the courtyard with its lemon, orange and grapefruit trees. Mediterran and subtropical gardens These gardens have been designed by the english landscape architect Gerald Luckhust. Gerald has been living for a long time in Portugal and is an expert for subtropical flora. His book "the Gardens of Madeira" ( Frances Lincoln Ltd. is a reference for the gardens on Madeira. The mediterran garden presents typical plants such as Olive trees, fig trees, rosebay, lavender, rosemary, sage , etc. The sub tropical garden shows palm trees (Phoenix Roebelinii, Archontophoenix, Encephalartos lehmanii), Spanish dagger (Yucca), Orange and black Bird of paradise (Strelitzia reginae und Strelitzia Nicolae), African Lily ( Agapanthus), Glory bush ( Tibuchina Urvilleana) et Banana trees. Endemic garden Typical maderain plants and trees are to be seen in this endemic garden : trees of the laurel family ( Ocotea foetens- fetid laurel-, laurus azorica - bay tree , apollonias Barbujana- Canary laurel, persea Indica - Madeira mahogany), Pride of madeira ( Echium Candicans, Echium nervosum) , Dragon tree ( dracaena draco), Tree heather ( erica Arborea), Besom heath ( erica scoparia) , etc. Vegetable Garden The hotel Atrio's vegetable garden is set on 1.500 m2. The vegetables and aromatic herbs are processed in the kitchen of the hotel for the preparation of the meals. The lemons, oranges, clementines and grapefruits are for the breakfast buffet. Raspberries, blueberries, red and black currants are for the jams, for the breakfast buffet and for the desserts.
