London, United Kingdom
Our first time travelling through China with my wife and 4 yo. son. Our final destination - Shanghai. We were so glad we chose to stay at the J Hotel Shanghai Tower, a place that represents the cutting edge of everything Shanghai has to offer.

This hotel really has the wow factor. Not only for the breathtaking views as the highest hotel in Shanghai, exquisite artwork and stunning decor but the service and attention to detail made our stay here all the more memorable.

Our room was on the 91st floor and I always enjoyed waking up in the morning retracting the automatic blind to see a new dawn in Shanghai, never seen a city from this perspective before.

Sightseeing: We took the river taxi across the Huangpu River and walked through the Bund taking a turn towards the People’s square. What was truly remarkable was that in the evening we were able to retrace our route from the 120th floor bar, looking down at the city below, I doubt any other hotel in the city could offer the same experience.

A special mention to all the staff who made our stay so enjoyable, everyone was so attentive and nothing was too much. We had an early morning flight back to London and they even prepared coffees for us and breakfast for our son, which was a very nice touch. I would definitely recommend the J Hotel to anyone who is looking for a unique modern Shanghai experience, Thank you!

The hotel is very beautiful and modern design, It is highest building in China and 3d in the world. I stayed 95 floor, The view is wonderful. The service is perfect and receptionists are very friendly and helpful. The room is deluxe and big. The bed is so comfort. The restaurant of breakfast is there lots of choice and delicious. Under the hotel guide Mr Liu Tzo, I understand lots of story about the hotel details and he is nice person. The location is good and just near metro station, from there you can easy take metro line 2 to Shanghai 2 international airport.

From beginning to end, my stay at J hotel was flawless. Jenny Duan checked me in and made suggestions for my overnight stay based on the amenities offered. She took me on a property tour and helped me with last minute dinner reservations at Jin Ting on 103th floor. Needless to say, I have a new favorite hotel in Shanghai. The five-star service is impeccable.

Stayed there for 3 night during our recent visit to Shanghai, China. After staying at many renowned properties in Puxi (west of the Huangpu River), we were curious about hotels in Pudong and decided to give this Chinese state-run hotel group’s first luxury property a try. The fact that the hotel is located in one of tallest buildings in Shanghai is another reason we picked it. However, our whole experience has been nothing but disappointment. Other than the standard services which all high end hotels provide, there was nothing that could justify the rate they charge. Of course $600 per night may not be much by Western standard, but given that you could stay at luxury international brand properties in China for much less, we kind of expected some spectacular experience. After that initial wow factor of the view from top, we found ourselves fairly disappointed by the amenities. Even the decor seems tacky and strange for hotels this level. There was nothing much to do nearby because you were surrounded by office towers and mall food. We ended up spending majority of our stay in Shanghai in Puxi once again. One day a rude staff member stopped us at ground floor lobby and asked us if we had reservation at the hotel or one of its restaurants. Because otherwise, we cannot go up to the lobby upstairs. Are you kidding me? After staying at so many top properties around the globe, this type of hotel greeting is definitely a first. Never again!

Fay Zhang wrote a review Jul 2021
I had a very poor experience at the restaurant Heavenly Jin at the 120th floor of the J Hotel with my husband and son last Sunday. I was appalled at their service.

1. There is only a set menu with no à la carte options.
The only way to order individual dishes is as an add-on to a set menu. The cheapest set menu for lunch started at RMB 888. When booking, we were not informed of this policy—that the restaurant only offers set menus and à la carte is only available after ordering set menus. After being seated, the wait staff did not explain this policy. It was only after we had gone through the extensive choices of Chinese, Japanese, and Western dishes and made our choices that the wait staff informed us that individual dishes can only be ordered on top of a set menu.

2. The wait staff gave us the incorrect menu.
We spent more than 10 minutes perusing the menu before the staff realized their mistake and told us they had given us the “old menu” and only then gave us the correct menu.

3. The wait staff forgot an entire menu, never realized their mistake, and never separated the set menus.
There are only four set menus available. Two Chinese set menus and two Western set menus. We ordered both Chinese set menus and one Western set menu. And the wait staff forgot our order for one of the Chinese set menus, leaving our party of three with only two set menus between us.

This issue could have easily been rectified and noticed earlier, if only the wait staff could keep track of our orders. Dishes were brought out individually and the waiters did not bother to explain or even tell us what each dish was, leaving us to guess and divvy up the food by ourselves. Sometimes the dishes were just placed in the middle of the table, leaving us guessing as to who’s food was what. At other times, they were randomly set down before us. This resulted in us being halfway through our meal (~40 minutes) before we realized that the waiter had missed one entire set menu. Despite the policy of requiring everyone to order a set menu, no staff realized that our party of three were only being served 2 set menus.

4. The wait staff could not keep track of the menus and were disorganized.
In addition to the above issues, my son ordered the Western set menu. The only time the wait staff bothered to name a dish, they referred to a shrimp ball in chicken soup as the “cod” with cheese sauce in the Western menu. An unnamed appetizer of two small disappointing bread rolls with butter were placed in the middle of the table. We were unsure of whether or not this was an unlisted appetizer for all set menus, or only for the Western set menus. In any event, it’s disappointing to pay more than RMB 888 per person and the first food to arrive at our table does not even have a portion for each of us. The bread was bland, like what you would have expected from a convenience store.

5. The wait staff did not clear the table and did not provide new cutlery.
We had to consistently request the wait staff to clear the table. Finished dishes piled into the middle of the table. Even when the staff came to deliver new dishes, no one bothered to clear out the empty plates. Furthermore, all seats are provided with one fork, one knife, one spoon, and two sets of chopsticks. Ideally, the fork and knife would be removed from those who ordered the Chinese set menus to avoid cluttering the table. They were not. To make things worse, my son, who ordered the Western set, had his fork and knife cleared with the dishes and was never provided with a new fork or knife until he specifically requested for them. It is clear that the wait staff have no experience with western fine dining.

6. The menus are mismatched.
Even if we were to ignore the atrocities listed above, the menus are hopelessly mismatched. The shortest Chinese set menu is around 8 dishes. The Western set menu was 4 dishes (appetizer, soup, main, and dessert). The portions for each dish between the Western set menus and the Chinese set menus are also similar. This means that the Western set has 50% of the food of the Chinese set for the same cost. It also means that my son spent 70% of the meal with an empty plate and no food. I cannot imagine any possible scenario where this Chinese set menu and Western set menu fit together.

I have never been to a restaurant with such poor service or such a poor concept.
In regards to the food, it is subpar for the price range.

The Chinese food is good, but nothing special. There were no dishes that stood out in my memory that I would return for. There are no specific outstanding delicacies from a particular cuisine that set the food apart or made it memorable. The set menu also did not give me a feel for any sort of seasonality, nor did it encourage me to try anything special. For RMB 888, you would expect more and you should get more.

The Western food is wholly underwhelming and will leave you disappointed and hungry.

1. Appetizer – A single poached langoustine with caviar.
A single small poached langoustine is too little as the appetizer for a four course meal. The plate was also dotted with a hellish mango sauce. Mango sauce and caviar is not a flavor combination anyone would expect nor appreciate.

2. Soup – Lobster bisque
Two tepid pieces of lobster tail placed in a tepid soup. Only the flavor of the soup was acceptable. It was topped with canned whipped cream. Canned whipped cream. Not crème fraiche, canned whipped cream. I cannot fathom why any high-end restaurant would have canned whipped cream, much less serve it on a lobster bisque.

3. Main – Cod(?) in cheese sauce with asparagus.
A fillet of cod (?) covered in cheese sauce. The fish itself was bland, flavorless, oddly chewy, and was not even seared. It was most likely prepared sous vide, and then immediately covered in sour cheese sauce that would jellify within 2 minutes. The three unseasoned stalks of boiled asparagus were the highlight of this dish.

4. Dessert – Yogurt and ice cream in spearmint soup.
A scoop of salty ice cream, several meringues, and balls of thickened citrus yoghurt in a tart spearmint soup. The presentation was quite nice, but the taste was akin to licking a lemon and then rinsing your mouth with spearmint oil. I assume the salty ice cream was provided just to prove you could taste something other than spearmint.

I apologize for the poor descriptions. Perhaps I could have described the dishes better had I not been confused by the old menu, had I knew which ones they were, and had they been described to me by the wait staff.

You pay a high premium for the view. Even if the service was perfect, and it is far from it, the food will not please anyone but the most depraved social media influencers who derive more sustenance from their “likes” than actual food. That is, if they ever get their food.

Overall Experience: 3/10. McDonalds is superior in every aspect except the view.

Oh Joy, oh joy, oh what a night spent on the Eve of New Years Eve in the J Hotel. Lived
and loved the “Hai” life in Shanghai’s newest
and “Hai”-est iconic 127 floor skyscraper ~The Shanghai Center on the Pudong side of the Huangpoo River. Spectacular views of the city complimented the first class service, hospitality and amenities. J Hotel is part of the Chinese State owned Jinjiang Group which recently acquired a majority stake in the Radisson Group, a major investor the Shanghai Disneyland Resort owning and operating the hotels in Shanghai Disneyland Resort, accessed its seemingly limitless deep coffers and spared no expense in creating this jewel in the crown! Our group was treated to
a private tour of the museum grade art pieces that accent throughout the hotel spaces and restaurants. It’s not a cheap date but it well worth saving up your pennies for this pretty amazing experience. Special shout out to Sam, who treated us to a private “art-walk” around the hotel, Shelley Wu for her impeccable service and warm hospitality and
Honson on the 84th floor lounge for his attention and generosity. So what does the J in J Hotel stand for? You can be the “J”udge after you stay there….

...why only almost, more on that a little later.
Just entering the foyer on the ground floor is fantastic, fresh, fragrant, beautiful flower bouquets everywhere.
Then you can quickly take the express lift to the 101 floor, in less than 1 minute, without the waiting time like with the lifts for the Observatory next door.
Once at the top (which is just below the observatory height) an incredible view opens up over Shanghai and the Bund.
A very attentive, friendly team welcomes you and after a few minutes you are back at a separate elevator and you either go down a few floors or up.
The rooms are very elegantly furnished, very large (minimum 60sqm) and absolutely luxurious. There's nothing to complain about, you have a fantastic view, in our case down to Jin-Mao and the WTC Tower(!). Great, especially in the evening/night.
The bar on the 84th floor is also great and what is indescribable is the restaurant Heavenly-Jin on the 125th floor (see my review there).
You can eat fantastically there, but not cheaply. But here you sit higher than the observatory in the building and also higher than the observatory in the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
There is a bar in front of the restaurant that also has a fantastic view.
Since we didn't have that much time, but our feet hurt from working/sightseeing, we couldn't use the SPA (which is why I don't rate it), but we hoped we could at least relax a bit in the pool.
And here's the reason for the "almost" from above: A hotel like this should be ashamed of that, shaded pool with cool water, not even a jacuzzi or anything. Lovely old chairs parked next to a few cheap loungers, no towel service, nothing! Shame on you!
Since we were only there for 2 days and then had a great pool area in the W Hotel opposite, that was bearable, but it wasn't meant to be.
Conclusion: Any time again, it's a really great hotel! You can rightly charge fantastic prices for this, but then the pool should really fit in with the rest of the hotel...
