UNOPS, under the Electricity for Critical Services (ECS) component of its #YIUSEP Programme funded by The World Bank, embarked on a transformative initiative across 15 cities in #Yemen aimed at revitalizing urban infrastructure and enhancing energy efficiency. With the goal of cultivating a safer, greener, and more sustainable environment, #YIUSEP has replaced outdated 250W-400W high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps with 80W solar LED street lighting and 100W LED street lighting units. These cities were grappled with numerous challenges due to their antiquated street lighting systems. The conventional lamps not only consumed excessive energy, leading to inflated electricity costs, but also placed considerable strain on the limited electrical supply available to these urban areas. Additionally, the lack of reliable street lighting raised serious safety and security concerns for residents. Under the #YIUSEP initiative, UNOPS has so far successfully installed over 23,000 LED street lights, illuminating approximately 790 kilometers of major city streets across the 15 targeted cities. The impact of the LED street lighting projects has been profound, yielding numerous benefits in key areas: Electricity Generation: The shift to solar LED street lighting has resulted in an impressive annual power generation of 1,286 MWh. Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings: The transition to solar LED and LED street lighting units has drastically reduced energy consumption compared to the old HPS lamps, leading to annual electricity savings of up to 31,000 MWh. This significant reduction will alleviate both current and future burdens on the local power grid. Environmental Benefits: By replacing HPS lamps with solar LED street lighting, the initiative has markedly decreased the carbon footprint of the cities, resulting in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 22,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually. Enhanced Safety and Security: The new solar LED street lighting and LED street lighting units provide brighter and more uniform illumination, greatly improving visibility on roads, sidewalks, and public spaces. This enhancement has created a safer environment, reduced accident rates, and heightened the overall sense of security for both residents and visitors. Through these transformative efforts, UNOPS is not only improving the urban landscape of #Yemeni cities but also promoting sustainability and safety for their inhabitants. Dr. Ashok Sarkar, Ph.D.
