Tech for Net Zero hat dies direkt geteilt
Here are my three key learnings from a panel discussion on Decarbonizing Cement that I had the pleasure to moderate this week: 1. Cement is No Longer Hard to Abate 💡 - Dozens of climate tech solutions are already available to decarbonize the cement industry. - Solutions can be clustered into five climate tech verticals to reach net zero: Industry Heat, Clinker, Supplements, Curing, and CCS. - Although adopting new technologies poses challenges like stranded assets and tech risks, a major strategy shift is essential for the cement industry. 2. CCS Will Drive the European Cement Industry Out of Business: ☠️ - Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is prohibitively expensive and delayed. - Europe's primary CCS project in Norway costs about €750m and isn't operational yet. - Scaling CCS to all German cement production would require a staggering €25bn in investments, plus at least €14bn for a 4600km CO2-pipeline network, plus operating cost. - Cheaper pathways to net zero are urgently needed, to avoid bankrupting the European cement industry. 3. Speed Up Certification of New Cementitious Materials 🚀 - Policymakers must expedite the certification process for new, lower-cost building materials. - Many promising materials such as recycled cement, biochar supplements, and other solutions have excellent properties but are stuck in decade-long certification processes. - Government reforms should focus on outcomes such as compressive strength, durability, and workability, rather than inputs to fast track decarbonization and reduce costs. - To speed up, governments can use auto-aprovals: If a new material that fulfills all the technical requirements has not been denied within 3 months, it get automatically certified. A big thank you to the panelists for your keynotes and deep insights, Lukas Gast at INZIN - Institut für die Zukunft der Industriegesellschaft , Carolin Boßmeyer at Heidelberg Materials, and Volker Thome Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP. This Friday, the European Investment Bank (EIB) Board of Governors will approve its new Strategic Roadmap for 2024-2027, which will support the EU build leadership and #competitiveness in strategic #cleantech sectors. Together with a group of 39 European cleantech innovators, investors, industry associations, researchers and NGOs, we have sent a letter to EIB President Nadia Calviño and Chairman of the Board Vincent Van Peteghem calling for expanding EIB #guarantees to unlock EU industrial competitiveness. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵? 👇 💰 Several cleantech sectors are currently under pressure due to the large-scale investments being made by other global players like China and the US. European cleantech manufacturers are being forced to turn down orders for lack of bank guarantees, which greatly limits the growth of these clean industries in Europe. Without a targeted solution, European manufacturers and supply chains will suffer competitively, with non-European competitors seizing the market share and undermining Europe’s industrial base. ⚡ A leaked version of the EIB Strategic Roadmap underscores guarantees as one of the EIB instruments that can efficiently address the financing gap of cleantech start-ups and SMEs by crowding-in private investments. The signatories of this letter strongly support this. By shifting risk from commercial banks to the EIB's balance sheet and the European budget, via InvestEU, European banks can offer new guarantee lines for cleantech projects and promote bank lending to emerging cleantech manufacturing. 👷♀️ Guarantees are essential to scale-up Europe's cleantech manufacturing significantly, reinforce the global competitiveness of EU green industry and secure Europe’s energy transition and resilience. In our joint letter, we make five detailed asks that outline how the EIB can help grow strategic cleantech sectors with the expansion of its public guarantee and including both manufacturing guarantees and loan guarantees to ramp up manufacturing capacity. 👇 https://lnkd.in/eHrEgBXW Tech for Net Zero 1.5° Ventures Tobias Lechtenfeld Pia Dorfinger Julian Joswig Maria Leis Theresa Jahr Sibylla Heckmann Raphael Putz Climate Strategy & Partners Cleantech for Europe I4CE - Institut de l'économie pour le climat / Institute for Climate Economics 2150 Aster Capital Atlantic Labs CAPHENIA DeepDrive Electrochaea Energy Dome Extantia Future Cleantech Architects Munich Venture Partners HV Capital ICODOS IKEM – Institut für Klimaschutz, Energie und Mobilität Kiko Ventures KRAFTBLOCK Matterwave Ventures Novocarbo Planet A Ventures RIFT Sunfire UnternehmerTUM Vireo Ventures World Fund

𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 🇪🇺🏛️ The #EU has initiated strategic support for green technologies through frameworks like the Net Zero Industry Act (#NZIA), but it’s time to take the next step. A real “European Energy Resilience Strategy” that takes #geopolitical rationale, energy #sovereignty and a competitive #advantage in #cleantech innovation into consideration is needed to support the #climatetech industry and strategic European directives. Furthermore, the implementation of Green Public Procurement (#GPP) is pivotal for strengthening the #greeneconomy. It reduces the government’s carbon footprint, drives #innovation, and lowers costs of climate technologies. Lastly, #regulatory sandboxes, which offer a controlled environment for developing and #scaling innovative climate solutions should be accelerated across member states. They facilitate real-world experimentation and reduce development time and risk while attracting #investments. 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌍🤝 This year's Future Cleantech Festival, organized by our friends from Future Cleantech Architects, was once more a great success! Many thanks to all organizations and individuals who contributed to this insightful gathering, we are looking forward to continuing our projects with you and starting new initiates!
My Learnings from this Year’s Future Cleantech Festival It's rare to find a cleantech event where heavy industry CEOs interact with climate tech founders, politicians listen to decarbonization experts, and industry leaders present groundbreaking solutions instead of lobbyist talking points. The #FutureCleantechFestival in #Remscheid, hosted by our friends at Future Cleantech Architects, is one such gem. This truly industrial city supports innovation and transformation like few other places in Germany. We need more of this technical depth to achieve #netzero. Key Takeaways: 🔥 Launching a New Initiative on Industry Heat Decarbonizing industry is possible today with innovative technologies. However, speed is essential. To advance the heat agenda, we launched the "Community of Practice for Industry Heat", uniting climate tech innovators and industrial players. More info: https://lnkd.in/dd98qGwH 💸 Affordable Green Energy is Key The biggest barrier to industrial decarbonization is the high cost of renewable energy. Despite the extremely low production cost, excessive surcharges and taxes can inflate renewable energy prices for industry by over 500% – we need immediate action! 💶 Exploring Alternative Financing We've seen various financing solutions for renewable energy, including communal investment models, virtual Purchasing Power Agreements (#vPPA), and many more. Can similar approaches help scale climate solutions in industry heat and other cleantech verticals? Corporate #greenbonds and #securitization could share the cost, risk, and return of green infrastructure projects. 🤝 Collaboration is Key Meeting partners at the Future Cleantech Festival is always valuable. It’s great to see again many Tech for Net Zero members making their way to Remscheid, including Maria Leis, Julius von der Ohe, PhD, Sophie Dres, Frederick Lessmann, and Fabian Sacharowitz, as well as our partners at German Energy Agency (dena), Breakthrough Energy , and BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt joining us. Special thanks to DIROSTAHL Karl Diederichs GmbH & Co KG and Schmitt Wilh. & Co. Kirschenwerkzeuge for hosting us at your manufacturing sites, showcasing industrial transformation firsthand. 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗨 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌍🚀 To accelerate Europe's #greentransition, the #EU must leverage existing resources and provide strong #incentives for climate tech #innovation. We suggest leveraging #revenues from the EU Emissions Trading System (#ETS) and making the #InnovationFund more accessible to #climatetech companies. Also, member states should allocate at least 25% of ETS revenues to domestic #cleantech manufacturing. Moreover, Contracts for Difference (#CfDs) can be a highly valuable instrument for closing the cost gap between new #lowcarbon technologies and current market prices. They offer financial certainty, thus encouraging investments in climate tech and ensuring long-term #competitiveness. Lastly, phasing out fossil fuel #subsidies is critical for creating a fair market for clean technologies, making green alternatives more #cost competitive and #attractive to investors.
