We see shifting political tides across Europe. Nonetheless, a new EU leadership will still need to find a credible answer to how the continent is to reach climate neutrality by 2050. To understand how to get there, we need a clear understanding of the progress already made. This is where the European Climate Neutrality Observatory (ECNO) comes in. The newly launched second annual progress report of the European Climate Neutrality Observatory (ECNO) shows positive movement in most sectors and cross-cutting areas, but the pace is still too slow to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Some of strongest progress has been seen in the domain of cleantech, as Europe races to build up its domestic manufacturing of the technologies needed to decarbonise. Private investment has hit record highs, while the EU’s domestic manufacturing of batteries has seen average growth of 131% annually since 2021. But is this pace of progress sufficient to keep Europe in the race in the face of accelerating global competition? Getting the funding right & fully implementing #NZIA & #CRMA should be pillars of any "New European Competitiveness Deal". Read more and download the report and summary for policy-makers https://lnkd.in/eiee4PCR ECNO, launched in 2023, aims to help the EU achieve climate neutrality by 2050 by providing scientifically rigorous annual checks of real-life progress across 13 economic sectors and cross-cutting areas. This year’s report looks at changes across a comprehensive set of 124 indicators and analyses policy contexts. #EUpolicy #climateneutrality #progressreport #ECNOlaunch

🏦 Public development banks (PDBs) can play a key role in tackling climate change if they align their operations with the Paris Agreement. A new report by CPI and I4CE - Institut de l'économie pour le climat / Institute for Climate Economics outlines a broad approach for PDBs to do so, and explores tools for implementation. It also provides recommendations on PDB action to support recipient countries’ low-emission climate-resilient development pathways, as well as engagement with net-zero portfolio methodologies. 🗎 ✨ Read the report: https://bit.ly/3xrRWC3 #PDB #ParisAgreement #climatefinance #greeningfinance

#I4CE_Report📊 in collaboration with Climate Policy Initiative Approaches to meeting the Paris Agreement goals: options for Public development banks ▶️ Since the Paris Agreement in 2015, several public development banks (PDBs) have responded with structured approaches to align their operations with the Agreement’s expectations ▶️ This report presents 6 case studies examining the practices of 5 PDBs and 1 private financial institution. 📖 These case studies have yielded the following key takeaways: 1️⃣ All five PDBs featured have taken a project-level approach to Paris alignment, using multiple operational benchmarks to complete their assessments. 2️⃣ Several PDBs have also integrated a net-zero portfolio approach; two use this to facilitate engagement with private-sector counterparts, while another uses its approach to align institutional activities more closely with the national climate goals of the countries in which they operate. 3️⃣ A strong program for counterparty engagement is crucial to the implementation of either approach. 4️⃣ PDBs that are active across multiple geographies and sectors require wider operational benchmarks to contextualize their alignment assessments. #ParisAgreementGoals #PublicDevelopmentBanks #PDBs 👇 https://lnkd.in/eijevGYh by Neil C., Nicole Pinko, Jide Olutoke, Claire Eschalier, Luis H Z., Sarah Bendahou

🚀Where does the EU stand on its journey to net zero? ⚠ The second annual progress report from the European Climate Neutrality Observatory (ECNO) highlights positive strides in most sectors and cross-cutting areas. However, the pace remains too slow to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. In six of the assessed building blocks – notably electricity, industry, cleantech, and fair transition – ECNO has reported significant improvements in enabling conditions for the transition, such as: 🔹 The share of variable renewable electricity generation increased by 2.2 percentage points per year, marking a notable improvement from last year’s assessment. 🔹 Employment in the renewable energy sector grew significantly, now totaling almost 1.7 million full-time equivalents. 🔗 Read more and download the report and summary for policymakers 👉 https://lnkd.in/ek_XuhCd Ecologic Institute NewClimate Institute Instytut Reform I4CE - Institut de l'économie pour le climat / Institute for Climate Economics Consult Climate 89up Thomas Gilon Julien Pestiaux Simon Lalieu (il/lui) Pauline Rohmer #EUpolicy #climateneutrality #progressreport #ECNOlaunch #ClimateChange #ClimateAction
