Sand and dust storms are a global hazard, and reducing the associated risks requires a global effort." Here's why: 🌊 Sea level rise from melting glaciers in Greenland increases the risk of saltwater intrusion, which degrades groundwater supplies, including drinking water. 🌡️ As the Arctic absorbs more heat due to less snow and ice, normal weather patterns are disrupted leading to both lingering heatwaves and drought as well as catastrophic flooding. ☀️ These impacts are global: unprecedented droughts have led to acute malnutrition, food shortage and humanitarian crises. These events drive the mass displacement of people, who are often forced into unhygienic conditions which facilitate the spread of disease. 🔬 Despite being one of the most remote regions of the world, the Arctic Ocean is littered with microplastics. In one species of Arctic algae, at the base of the foodweb, researchers estimate there are 31,000 tiny pieces of plastic per cubic metre. Climate change and sea level rise have influenced severe coastal erosion at Bolongfeyoe, the first community-protected reserve in The Gambia, our sea turtle hatchery has washed away, and our livelihood is under serious threat we need to act now. Strong wave action and coastal flooding are influencing saltwater intrusion into our farmlands the situation is alarming and we need quick and strategic intervention.
