The Swiss Council of States wants to cut CHF 2 billion from the #internationalcooperation budget in favour of the Swiss army. Projects in Eastern Europe could suffer. "This is incredibly short-sighted. These countries are on our doorstep," says Matthias Herr to the CH Media, stressing that Switzerland must strengthen #peace in the region. On the one hand, Helvetas focuses on boosting the economy and reducing youth unemployment in #WesternBalkans an #EasternEurope. On the other hand, it strengthens administrative and governmental structures as well as #civilsociety by promoting public services and the participation of the population in political processes. Last year, Helvetas supported more than 725,000 people in the region. Matthias Herr, Helvetas Regional Director East and Southeast Europe Programme, explains that this is the wrong time to withdraw from the region. Helvetas has been working in these countries for 20 years: "During this time, Switzerland has been able to contribute a great deal to the stability of the region." 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲. 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱. 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱. 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲. The journey of these 9,000 grassroots women has not been easy, but they never relented. They learned how to advocate for their rights and those of their communities. They put all their efforts, their passion, and sometimes their only money into electoral campaigns for a seat in a local government body, defying entrenched stereotypes. They are the incredible participants in the project “Aparajita: Political Empowerment of Women” supported by Switzerland through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and implemented by Helvetas together with Democracywatch, Rupantar, Prip Trust, and Khan Foundation in 540 Unions across 16 districts of Bangladesh. The last phase of the project has just ended. But the Aparajitas, as they came to identify themselves, will continue to meet and fight for women’s voices to be heard. 👉 Get inspired by their story https://lnkd.in/dE-Ytkng Franca Roiatti Prashanta Tripura Fatema Mahmuda Corinne Henchoz Pignani Agnieszka Kroskowska Celestine Kroesschell Benjamin Blumenthal Tajmary Akter

The Swiss online magazine watson News published a multifaceted report on the successful South-South cooperation in #Ethiopia, where Nepalese and Ethiopian engineers have been working together since 2009 to build #trailbridges, enabling more and more people to avoid dangerous gorge crossings and time-consuming detours, children to get to school on time, farmers to sell their harvested fruit before it rots, and pregnant women or the sick to get to hospital quickly. “When a bridge is completed, I not only feel a great sense of satisfaction, but I am also impressed by how the people have worked on the bridge and overcome all the difficulties. When I see how happy and satisfied people are with the bridges, it makes me sentimental," says Pasang Sherpa, a Nepalese bridge engineer. Helvetas and the Direktion für Entwicklung und Zusammenarbeit (SDC) have built more than 10,000 bridges in #Nepal since the 1960s. 19 million people have benefited from these bridges, which have stimulated growth throughout the region. Last year, Helvetas and the SDC handed over the project to the Nepalese government, which is continuing it independently. In 2009, Helvetas launched South-South cooperation to share its knowledge and experience beyond Nepal's borders. Here you can find the article written by Salome Woerlen: https://lnkd.in/eFTmN_AQ

🔍 Discover insights into the educational realities and needs of migrant children and youth in West and North Africa in a new paper by Mixed Migration Centre (MMC). Key findings include: 🏫 57% of caregivers reported that children in their care were not accessing childcare or education services at the time of the interview. 🎓 29% of caregivers highlighted that access to formal or informal education is the most critical need for the children in their care, more so than food assistance (20%) and healthcare access (18%). 💼 Lower education levels significantly correlate with increased job-finding difficulties. 📥 Download the report in English or French to explore more findings https://lnkd.in/eXfV8h9x The paper was published in partnership with Helvetas, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, State Secretariat for Migration SEM, Switzerland, Terre des hommes foundation, and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
