The world’s first Venture Studio for forests.

Info

Brainforest is a for-impact venture studio for forests & climate. Enabled by the Migros Pioneer Fund, part of the social commitment of the Migros Group, and cofounded by the WWF Switzerland, we are striving for game-changing solutions to unlock the full climate potential of forests at speed, scale, and quality through entrepreneurial approaches. We start with three focus areas: 1. Measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) of forest carbon enabled by high-resolution remote sensing and machine learning. 2. Connectivity of supply and demand of forest carbon in a trustable way. 3. Innovative financing mechanisms to unlock all forests value.

We are pleased to highlight the latest insights from Joshua Berger (CEO and founder at The Biodiversity Footprint Intelligence Company (BioInt)), a valued member of our Expert Decision Panel at Brainforest and an expert on biodiversity impacts and dependencies. 🌳👨🏫 In his recent edition of "The Nature Intelligence" newsletter 🗞️, Joshua addresses a critical issue: "How to balance positive environmental actions with the negative impacts of supply chains." His latest publication covers: 1️⃣ A framework for managing supply chain impacts, focusing on balancing actions and contributions beyond the immediate business scope. 2️⃣ The importance of understanding the equivalence of positive and negative impacts, crucial for maintaining ecological integrity and securing funding. 3️⃣ A detailed discussion of how to apply these principles using a case study of a European agrifood company and its Indonesian palm oil supply chain. ➡️ We highly recommend following Joshua Berger here on LinkedIn and subscribing to his newsletter for more insights into measuring and managing nature impacts, dependencies, and risks. 🚀 #biodiversity #startup #venturebuilding #newsletter Camille Accolas Thomas Gmeiner Julie Qin Ben O'Sullivan

😎 - At Brainforest, we believe that a fun work culture is just as important as the work itself! 🪩 Once a month, our team, spread across various locations, comes together for a remote event filled with laughter and creativity. This time, we played a thrilling game of 4-in-a-row on a Miro board 🟡 🔴. Shoutout to Ben O'Sullivan for coming up with this fantastic idea and making it incredibly fun! Taking a break and enjoying these moments not only strengthens our bonds but also brings out the most creative solutions from our talented coworkers (shout out to Thomas 💪). It's amazing to see how play can spark innovation and teamwork, even in a remote setting. Plus, after some laughter and time with our minds off work, our productivity increases by far! 📈 Here’s to more fun, creativity, and collaboration! 🙌 Leo Caprez, Camille Accolas, Elijah Kilzer, Nir Vaida, Julie Qin, Gioia Lelli #Brainforest #RemoteWork #TeamBuilding #FunAtWork #Creativity #WorkCulture #4InARow

We, at Brainforest, are proud to support Muvuca Agroflorestal, the winner of our Regenerative Food Forest Lab cohort! They are on a mission to leveraging agroforestry to reforest Brazil and create regenerative food systems! We are immensely proud of Muvuca's work and excited to continue supporting their journey. And the winner is...[drumroll 🥁]...Orijin! 🌱🏆  After 10 weeks of intensive collaboration and an incredibly competitive pitch event, we are excited to share that Orijin has emerged as the winner of our 3rd Venture Program! 🎉 Led by Salla Mankinen and Teemu Hurmeranta, Orijin is dedicated to combating deforestation by ensuring EUDR compliance for producers and importers of coffee and cocoa in Africa and Latin America. Their mission is to help producers digitalize their data from the very first mile of production, often deep in the rural countryside. This innovative approach provides monetizable business insights and traceability with a level of ease and accessibility previously unavailable to them. We were very impressed by their solution and the potential impact it holds. It was a difficult decision to make and we are beyond thankful to our Expert Decision Panel for their input and support in this process: Martin Studer, Amir Suissa, Yannick Ritschel, Jaboury Ghazoul and Joshua Berger. Congratulations again to Salla and Teemu ⭐️ Stay tuned for more updates as we embark on this exciting journey together! #ventureprogram #entrepreneurship #biodiversity

That’s a wrap on Hack! I had the privilege of spending 48h in Lausanne among a community of climate enthusiasts and what a blast it was 🚀 Why I’ll be back next year? → great food and even better convos 🌮 had the opportunity to meet founders, enablers, investors and experts in the field! → an amazing space 🪩 events like these can get a little intense and clostrophibic but HackSummit hit the nail on the head with their minimalist setup. → tons of amazing side events 🐝 it was hard to pick from the long list of great events organized throughout the week. Adrian, Kevin Webb and myself had the pleasure to host more that 50 biodiversity colleagues in the heart of Lausanne 🥂 Thank you Emilie, Laura and the whole Hack ecosystem for this amazingly successful event! Looking forward to reconnecting with faces old and new to grow our Brainforest ecosystem and support biodiversity startups far and wide 🌍 #HackSummit2024 #biodiversity #networking

What’s the best head start an impact entrepreneur can get? 🤔 Last Thursday, I had the wonderful opportunity to dive into this question at HackSummit. Congrats to this great event with epic side events! The panel discussion, featuring Michael Langguth from Carbon13, Alex Prather from Newlab, Jonathan Berger from The Kitchen Hub, Jonny Everett from Marble and Rebecca Ravenni from Techstars was super exciting and to see how these innovative companies support startups in the climate space in different ways as Venture Builder, Venture Studio or Venture Platform fantastic. This discussion was a perfect match with our internal discussions and strategy process at Brainforest and our quest to find the best way to reach our BHAG of 20 mio. hectares protected or regenerated until 2030. Here's how we are going to move forward in the next months and years: 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬: We're focussing more and more on bringing together ideas, talent, and capital effectively, emphasizing incubation and acceleration for early-stage startups. We want to work with the best teams and founders in the space of forests and biodiversity and provide the best support they can get. 𝐁𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: We mix philanthropic funds with impact investments to de-risk projects and attract more capital. This approach ensures financial sustainability while maximizing social and environmental impact. We are currently building up our Recoverable Grant Fund and Canopy Portfolio. Happy to get in touch with mission aligned partners that want to use their philanthropic capital with a high leverage ratio! 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐞: Our Venture Programs leverage our extensive network of experts and our blended finance approach, providing startups with the support they need to thrive. We are building up those connections right now and are eager to get in touch! 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞: As a fundament for our activities, we identify key leverage points in critical ecosystems through systems mapping exercises, calling for innovative teams and startups to join us at the early stages. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭: We offer hands-on expertise, be it business development, design or financial modeling and much more. We aim the be your extended team. Our dedication to nature, forests, and biodiversity remains at the core of our mission. It's an exciting time for Brainforest as we continue to pioneer new models in the impact venture ecosystem. #HackSummit #VentureStudios #VenturePlatform #Biodiversity Let's build a regenerative future together! 🌱 Feel free to reach out if you're interested in collaborating or learning more about our initiatives.

The past weekend, we had the pleasure of gathering in Zurich before our much-anticipated pitch event 🚀🇨🇭🎤. Therefore, on Sunday, before the big day, we enjoyed a delightful evening at a Japanese restaurant, enjoying the great company with Thomas Gmeiner, Nandor Ersek-Obadovics, Gábor Vágó, Totoro 🐱 , Camille Accolas, Gioia Lelli, Salla Mankinen, Denis Frischmann and Yannick Ritschel 😎 🍜 Unfortunately, Dipu Varghese from NoArk Technologies and Teemu Hurmeranta from Orijin could not join live, so they joined us online 🧑💻! It has been incredibly special working with all of these talented founders over the past 10 weeks. We've thoroughly enjoyed watching them develop their business models and themselves, and we are so proud of their progress. Hosting our program fully online made it even more special to finally meet them in real life. Cheers to Boosterra.io, Leeana, Orijin and NoArk! 💯 ➡️ Stay tuned for the pitch pictures coming soon and the announcement of the winner(s)! 🖼️ #ventureprogram #entrepreneurs #forest #biodiversity
