Thanks to RBCx for featuring AmacaThera's drug development platform and startup journey in, "Revolutionizing Pain Management: How AmacaThera is Helping to Combat the Opioid Crisis." The article includes interviews with Co-Founders CEO Mike Cooke and Chief Science Officer Molly Shoichet, and covers both the original research behind the company, led by Shoichet's lab at the University of Toronto, and the team’s progress in bringing AMT-143 to market. Here's an excerpt: Every 65 minutes and 22 seconds. That’s how often someone dies from an opioid overdose in Canada. On average, it works out to about 22 people per day. By comparison, at the height of Covid-19, the death toll in 2020 was about 11 per day. All told, opioids—a class of prescription pain-relieving medications that include heroin, fentanyl, morphine, oxycontin, among others—have killed more than 42,000 Canadians since tracking began in 2016. According to the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), Canada holds the dubious distinction of having the second highest rate of opioid–related deaths, just behind the U.S. In the face of such brutal numbers, it’s clear that combatting the opioid epidemic requires an all-hands-on-deck approach, integrating everything from health care providers and emergency services to all levels of government. A pair of scientists-turned-startup-entrepreneurs, however, believe that the private sector, specifically their emerging biotech company, can play a critical part in solving this widespread and devastating issue. Mike Cooke and Molly Shoichet are the co-founders of AmacaThera, a Toronto-based venture offering a novel way to provide pain relief without the use of opioids. Their breakthrough product, which is currently in clinical trials, was spun out of research led by Shoichet from her lab at the University of Toronto, where she’s a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry. Cooke, who hails from the U.K., worked in the lab studying stem cells while pursuing his PhD. In 2016, the two joined forces (she as chief science officer; he as CEO) with a vision, Cooke says, of “translating their academic research into real-world products” that have the potential to herald a promising avenue for long-term opioid reduction strategies. It's been a busy week at the intersection of FDA policy and healthcare AI... 🚀 Today, the FDA, Health Canada | Santé Canada, and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, further identified guiding principles for #transparency for machine learning-enabled medical devices (MLMDs). These principles build on the guiding principles for good machine learning practice (GMLP), released in 2021. Specifically, the principles serve as a framework when adopting and advancing good transparency practices while emphasizing the role of human-centered design and explainability. The guiding principles for transparency of MLMDs consider the following: who (relevant audiences), why (motivation), what (relevant information), where (placement of information), when (timing), and how (methods used to support transparency). Collectively, the guiding principles may shed light on novel legal issues in the #SaMD space relating to generative AI. ➡ On Monday, the FDA added six new web pages to its Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) #AI Program hub. The new content covers a variety of topics, including: - Methods and Tools for Effective Postmarket Monitoring of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-Enabled Medical Devices - Identifying and Measuring Artificial Intelligence (AI) Bias for Enhancing Health Equity - Performance Evaluation Methods for Evolving Artificial Intelligence (AI)-Enabled Medical Devices Unsurprisingly, the FDA continues to play an instrumental role in the AI regulatory arena. While initial concerns focused on ChatGPT’s writing capabilities, recent updates have integrated DALL-E 3’s image generation features, extending the risks to visual evidence in biomedical research. Our tests revealed ChatGPT’s nearly barrier-free image generation feature can be used to generate experimental result images, such as blood smears, Western Blot, immunofluorescence and so on."

After its digital diabetes tool evaluation, Peterson Health Technology Institute (PHTI) turned its attention to virtual musculoskeletal (MSK) solutions. But unlike the previous report, this one contained good news for developers and users: MSK solutions work and can help drive healthcare cost savings. According to Caroline Pearson, the top line takeaway here is that “patients who have MSK disorders have real equal choices between whether they want to pursue in-person physical therapy or virtual therapy.” Read more about the latest PHTI evaluation and Caroline’s insights in my article for mHealthIntelligence.

"Although the current ability of ChatGPT to generate experimental images is limited, our simple tests have demonstrated the significant risks of misuse in generating images. . .ChatGPT theoretically has the potential to generate entire academic papers from scratch, including text, raw data, and experiment result images. While images generated by ChatGPT currently are not as realistic as those generated by GANs [Generative Adversarial Networks], the low barrier to use and rapid technical improvements mean the generated images will likely be more realistic in future." The Life Science industry is poised for massive global growth, which *𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙* benefit the Toronto region by attracting more foreign-owned companies and improving the retention of home-grown companies looking to scale. While we have many of the required resources to make this a world-class destination for the world's leading life sciences businesses: an incredibly well-educated talent pool, abundance of research capabilities in relevant areas from artificial intelligence to regenerative medicine and some of the world's top thinkers in the space, one thing we *don't* have is an adequate amount of wet lab space. The latest CBRE Toronto Lab Market report puts current demand at 1.7 million square feet - we have nowhere near this amount of space. If companies can’t find space here, they will leave for a jurisdiction that offers it. There is progress being made. Last year I spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony of Seeker Labs 155,000 sqft Catalyst development, purpose-built for life sciences scheduled to open its doors less than a year from now. SpinUp at UTM, an incubator for early stage companies at University of Toronto (Mississauga), recently welcomed their first cohort. And, just last week I was fortunate to be a part of SPEC Labs' announcement of a 20,000 sqft multi-tenant wet lab facility in Mississauga, opening Q2 2025. Momentum is promising but we cannot afford to take our foot off the gas. This is a pivotal moment for the Toronto Region in the race to be a top global destination for Life Sciences.
