The official account for the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
About us
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992 and entered into force on 29 December 1993. It is the first global agreement to cover all aspects of biological diversity: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), based in Montreal, Canada, was established to support the goals of the Convention. Its primary functions are to organize meetings, prepare reports, assist member governments in the implementation of the various programmes of work, coordinate with other international organizations and collect and disseminate information.

At COP 15 the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) UN Biodiversity committed to revising or updating National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) in alignment with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), including national targets communicated in a standardized format to the CBD Secretariat. The rationale is clear: #NBSAPs and the associated targets are the main vehicle for implementation of the #KMGBF, translating the global agreement into national action. Progress is being made. As of today, 49 Parties have submitted a total of 1326 national targets [https://ort.cbd.int/]. 14 Parties have submitted their aligned #NBSAPs [https://lnkd.in/evkpzZmp]. Congratulations ! Looking forward to more progress ahead of COP 16 #COP16Colombia.

🌳Dense mangroves can protect an area by reducing storm surges by 66% on their own. 🐠If coral reefs are present too, they can help reduce the wave strength and height, cutting down the impact of extreme weather events, like floods further🌊 Check out the 3️⃣ natural barriers can weaken tsunamis and save lives👇 via United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)

Halting deforestation is crucial in combating the climate crisis. 🌍 Forests absorb carbon dioxide and preserve biodiversity, but 10 million hectares are lost annually—an area the size of Portugal. By stopping #deforestation, we can significantly reduce carbon emissions and protect our planet's health. Learn how global efforts can make a difference in this UN Environment Programme article. 🌳
