"Even if the summer rain we have seen has reduced the severity of the #ABdrought, we are likely to face the same challenges again in the coming years and we need to have the tools and knowledge in place to manage them. In other words; yes. It’s raining, but now is not the time to stop talking about how #innovation can help us manage drought." Utilizing some of Alberta’s bitumen for carbon fibre production adds value to our natural resources, creates new jobs for Albertans and reduces emissions, with the potential to generate substantial revenue for our province. On July 4, Alberta Innovates celebrated the announcement of a $10 million grant from PrairiesCan to build Canada’s first pre-commercial scale carbon fibre production facility at the Edmonton Research Park. Alberta Innovates' AVP of Clean Energy Bryan Helfenbaum, Director of the BBC program Paolo G. Bomben, Board Chair Tony Williams, and Interim CEO Michael Mahon (left to right) took the occasion to grab a photo with the first hockey stick produced from Alberta bitumen-based carbon fibre. Testing out a new product or technology in its intended environment helps determine whether it works as designed. Think of an IKEA bookshelf – it always looks like it will fit, until it’s physically in your living room and a centimeter too wide. The same concept applies to agriculture technology. Smart farms act as test environments, where new agriculture tech, often a digital-based solution, is trialed under real-life conditions to find which elements work as predicted and what can be improved. After the trial period, the tech or tool can be deployed across other farms with greater confidence that it will positively contribute to operations. Here at Alberta Innovates, many of the early-stage technologies we fund are first tested at smart farms before heading to market. We’re proud to be close partners with Olds College of Agriculture & Technology one of Canada’s premier smart farms and a member of a Canadian network of smart farms sharing knowledge and learnings (our friends at Canadian Agri-Food Automation & Intelligence Network).
