With over two decades dedicated to education, I began my journey as a history and government teacher, where I ignited a passion for critical thinking and leadership in my students. This passion carried me to the Washoe County School District’s Curriculum & Instruction Department, where I developed transformative curricula and led groundbreaking teacher training programs in social studies and literacy. My commitment also extended to the University of Nevada, Reno, where I inspired future educators for eight years, and to founding the Nevada Center for Civic Engagement, which significantly enhances civic education across our state.

Now, as the principal of Doral Academy in Reno, I strive to uphold the highest educational standards and foster an environment where every student can excel. Appointed to the Nevada State Board of Education by Governor Joe Lombardo in 2023, I champion educational reforms and equitable resources to ensure every student in Nevada receives a premier education.

I am fervently committed to advocating for Northern Nevada, ensuring our region receives the attention and resources it deserves. My platform is a testament to my unwavering dedication to improving our schools and empowering every child in Nevada to achieve their fullest potential. This is more than a professional role; it is my heartfelt commitment to our community and the future of our children.

  • We must ensure no child attends a failing school. Decades of research show us the path to fostering student success, requiring the political will to prioritize essential reforms. All schools should adopt only high-quality curricula and materials, and every teacher must access ongoing professional learning based on proven best practices. Accepting that 60% of students in our state read below grade level—and even more fail in math—is unacceptable. I advocate for robust accountability, shining a light on underperforming schools, coupled with substantial support. Educators deserve the resources and training necessary to deliver a rigorous education to all students.
  • Every family, every student, and every educator deserves to feel safe at their school, and my commitment is to helping all schools embrace practices to promote a positive culture that does not permit violence or bullying and where students’ and staff social and emotional well being are paramount. Students must feel safe in order to learn, and teachers must feel safe in order to be the best educators they can be.
  • As the member of the State Board of Education who serves the ten Northern Nevada counties, I vow to always fight for equity of resources for our schools. Every school in our state should be provided with equitable funding. I will also advocate against blanket policies and practices that may be necessary in Southern Nevada but which do not serve the students and families of Northern Nevada.

I am deeply passionate about education and have dedicated my life to unraveling its complexities. As the principal of Doral Academy, a five-star charter school, I am committed to enhancing educational standards and practices. My focus areas include advocating for high-quality curricula and teaching materials, ensuring continuous professional development for teachers, and fostering accountability and support in schools to guarantee that every child achieves their fullest potential.

Effective governance and public trust hinge on several key characteristics and principles that an elected official should embody. Foremost among these is the ability to actively listen to constituents, ensuring that their needs and concerns are accurately represented and addressed. Equally important is possessing a deep understanding of the key issues within their jurisdiction, allowing for informed decision-making and meaningful contributions to policy discussions. Integrity is also crucial, as it fosters transparency and builds trust by upholding ethical standards and demonstrating honesty. Empathy is essential for understanding the diverse challenges faced by constituents, guiding officials to make compassionate and fair decisions. Effective decision-making skills, particularly under pressure, involve weighing evidence, considering expert opinions, and assessing potential impacts. Additionally, clear and open communication is vital for engaging the public and explaining policies in an understandable way. Lastly, a genuine commitment to public service motivates an official to focus on the community's welfare over personal gain, driving successful and responsive governance. These principles collectively ensure that an elected official can serve their community effectively, maintaining trust and responsiveness in their role.

I possess several qualities that I believe would make me a successful officeholder. My extensive background in education, from teaching to administration, has instilled a deep understanding of policy and community needs, allowing me to make informed decisions that can profoundly impact educational standards and practices. My proven leadership at Doral Academy and on the Nevada State Board of Education showcases my ability to implement effective educational reforms and advocate for equitable resources. I am also committed to transparency and accountability, ensuring that all actions taken are in the best interests of the community. Moreover, my ability to listen and empathize with constituents allows me to represent their concerns authentically and effectively. These qualities, combined with a relentless drive to improve and a steadfast dedication to public service, prepare me to be a dedicated and effective officeholder.

The State Board develops the vision for student achievement across the state. We review achievement data, assessments, and set standards to ensure teachers and students can grow. I bring a laser focus: we must increase student achievement so that Nevada can become a Top Ten state for educational excellence.

President Felica Ortiz
Nevada Association of School Administrators

Financial transparency and government accountability are vital for a healthy democracy. Transparency ensures that the public can see and understand how public funds are used, helping prevent corruption and encourage informed civic participation. Accountability ensures that government officials are answerable for their actions, maintaining integrity and public trust in governance. Together, these principles promote responsible and effective management of public resources.
