  • It has been so inspiring to see staff and representatives from Cricket NSW, NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW Ambulance and Qudos Bank Arena connecting with the land, air and waters now known as Sydney Olympic Park during NAIDOC Week. The Park is situated on the traditional lands of the Wann clan, and it has been a place of gathering for the First Nations people, who came to Wangal Country to meet, celebrate, and trade for thousands of years. For those who haven't visited before, located along Burramattagal (Parramatta River) is the Murama Healing Space and Wangal Walk, a place where you can stop, reflect and connect to Country. In this community space, take your time absorbing an extensive collection of public artworks and installations that share accounts from First Nations Australians. Free, accessible and open to visitors of all ages and from all backgrounds, this special place is a perfect spot to 'Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud' 🖤💛❤️ 📷: Qudos Bank Arena's staff embarking on a journey through the Murama Healing Space. 📷: Ambulance NSW visited the Murama Healing Space and participated in a smoking cleansing ceremony, Acknowledgement and explored the Wangal Walk.

  • We are proud to announce that we have won an Excellence award at the 2024 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) Awards for our SIMP@CT - Urban Cooling Research Project in partnership with Western Sydney University.   Smart Irrigation Management for Parks and Cool Towns (SIMP@CT) is an innovative technology that transforms public parks into urban air conditioning systems that effectively reduce air and surface temperatures and thereby maximise Park Cool Island effects. With increasingly warm summers, park visitors and residents have benefited from these positive thermal impacts. Irrigation systems have also been used to downregulate air and surface temperatures to help mitigate the impacts of climate change on green infrastructure and ecosystems. We were up against four other impactful projects in the NSW chapter for Research, Policy and Communications and we are thrilled to have won this award. It’s a great achievement for all that were involved including David Martin, Hassan Narimani, Sally Hamilton, Maria Rigoli and Sebastian Pfautsch.

Construction has officially begun on Haslams Pump Track, an exciting new addition for riders and thrill seekers – right next to the BMX track and URBNSURF Sydney! This new development is part of the NSW Government's Places to Play program, a strategic initiative aimed at investing in recreational spaces to promote health, well-being, and community connection. Did you know? 🐸 Our Environmental Management Plan was put in place to help us protect the native flora and fauna that is unique to the Park. This means that we need to consider things from all angles, including the installation of frog fencing in locations that border the frog’s habitat. We’re looking forward to seeing and sharing the impressive build from Common Ground Trails in the weeks to come. • We are thrilled to announce that we have won the Trusted IoT Service Award at the 2024 Australian IoT Awards! IoT Alliance Australia Our pilot project for Digital Trust for Places and Routines (DTPR) was a first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. DTPR is an internationally recognised open-source communication standard to increase transparency and accountability for digital technology in public places. We’re proud to have worked with Transport for NSW and Helpful Places to rollout the pilot in 2023, and now to see that our work in engaging and collaborating with the community is being recognised as industry best practice. During the pilot, we implemented transparent signage and information in public places, aiming to make data collection more visible. The DTPR signs tell the story of the technology in use, the data being collected, who is collecting it and what they are using it for. The QR code provided more information for community members and visitors to learn more, ask questions and provide feedback about the technology being used across the Park. The system has been used to communicate about a smart irrigation management pilot, and a pilot using de-identified footage and other data for crowd safety purposes. Congratulations to all who were nominated at these awards. This project wouldn’t have been possible without the support from Jason Farra & Jacqueline Lu at Helpful Places and from Rory Brown, Emily Rucker, Lizzy Pattinson, Beth Pankhurst and other key stakeholders across NSW Government. The Place Management team at SOPA should be very proud of this award; Susan Skuodas, Mike Bartlett, Dario Phillips, Andy Ko, and Annelise Maurer. • 🌞🍂 Happy World Environment Day! Today we're celebrating all things nature and there's lots of ways you can enjoy and celebrate it too. Spend some time at the Waterbird Refuge in Bicentennial Park, a rich estuarine wetland that is a hotspot for birdwatching. Enjoy watching the intriguing behaviour of ducks, pelicans, and waders from the Bird Hide. 🐦 🏞️ Bring a picnic and enjoy dining in the great outdoors at Wentworth Common. Take a moment to breathe in the scenery and observe the wildlife that is sharing the space with you. Take the time to understand the threats that our wildlife faces living in a human-shaped world. Think about how you can co-exist with nature and help to keep the Park's wildlife thriving. 🌲 🦆
