The Melbourne Chinatown Association (MCA) is proud to have successfully organised and delivered the Chinese Lunar New Year Festival - celebrating the Year of the Dragon in Melbourne's Chinatown on Sunday 11 February. Since our official and exclusive appointment as the Organiser last September, in partnership with the City of Melbourne's Event Partnership Program, we are proud to have produced such a high quality, vibrant and inclusive event that the community found worthwhile and engaging. Key highlights of our Chinese Lunar New Year Dragon Festival in 2024 include: 🐉 Record attendance exceeding last year (which boasted the highest community attendance to date). 🐉 Showcasing the iconic Millennium Dragon Parade. 🐉 Collaborating closely with the Chinese Masonic Society and Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne to enable vibrant and substantial lion dance performers throughout Chinatown. 🐉 Organising the largest official Hanfu parade in Australia. 🐉 Having over 50 individual performances on our Main Stage, showcasing over 140 performers. 🐉 Producing a Dragon Statue Art Installation and Wishing Well at Golden Square Car Park. As with all large-scale events, such undertakings could not be achieved without the support of our partners: City of Melbourne Victoria State Government (Victorian Government) Federation of Chinese Associations in Victoria Asia Exchange Partnership. Catherine Tan, a valued member of our Executive Committee at the Melbourne Chinatown Association (MCA), embodies the spirit of cultural preservation and celebration. Her unwavering passion for her heritage and dedication to keeping traditions alive inspire us all. As a volunteer, she has poured her heart and soul in assisting with the delivery of major cultural events. Recently, on 11 February 2024, we organised the Chinese Lunar New Year Festival to celebrate the Year of the Dragon - with record breaking community attendance of over 200,000 people! In her own words, Chinese Lunar New Year is more than just a holiday—it's a cherished tradition that connects generations and celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Asian-Australians. Catherine's enthusiasm for sharing this joy with others is infectious, and her commitment to inclusivity ensures that everyone feels welcome to join in the festivities. Beyond her involvement with the association, Catherine is also a talented commercial litigation lawyer and a gifted singer known by her stage name, Ching. On this International Women's Day, let's celebrate Catherine and all the women who are making a difference in our community and beyond.
