Benefits of publishing Open Access

What are the benefits of publishing Open Access? There are many reasons to publish your article Open Access, from increasing public access to research to easily sharing your article:

Reach broader audiences

Open access broadens the total reach of your article. Anyone, not just those with access through their institution or a private subscription, can read your work. News outlets can easily reference your research to contribute to important stories. Or, social media users can find and share your article, widening the potential audience.

Give back to the public

Most of the funding for research is provided by governments, which means that public money supports research that is often inaccessible behind paywalls. Publishing open access removes the barrier between research and the public, expanding the research community to include anyone with an internet connection. It maximizes the possibility that academia, industry and/or society will reap the benefits of your hard work.

Increase the impact of your research

Open access can add value to the scholarly publishing process by maximizing discoverability and distribution of research materials online through a clear framework for reuse. Publishing open access means that anyone can view and make use of your work in perpetuity. A study in BMJ estimated that on average open access articles receive 89% more full-text downloads and 23% more unique visitors than articles published under traditional licenses. Higher visibility can lead to more citations. SPARC Europe estimates that open access articles receive on average 50% more citations.

Commitment to eliminating barriers to publication

Oxford University Press is deeply committed to fostering an academic community that supports and benefits from the talents of researchers from a wide range of backgrounds.
