About the Journal

Open Forum Infectious Diseases (OFID) is a fully open-access journal advancing the field of infectious diseases by publishing and promoting high-quality research that improves patient care and public health outcomes. Our goal is to foster collaboration among practitioners, researchers, and policymakers by providing a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas. The journal focuses on publishing innovative clinical and translational research, exploring the impact of the natural environment on infectious diseases, enhancing publication literacy among infectious diseases practitioners, and addressing global health challenges. See OFID’s full list of subject sections.

OFID does not publish papers focused on non-infectious-diseases topics unless they are of inherent interest to the infectious diseases community (e.g., medical education papers that aren’t focused on infectious diseases but which have direct applicability to infectious diseases pedagogy). OFID also does not accept phase 1 clinical trials, which may be a better fit for our sister journal, The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

With an Impact Factor of 3.8, the journal is ranked 34 out of 132 journals in the field of infectious diseases.

Papers Sought by OFID

Innovative Clinical and Translational Research

OFID publishes manuscripts that present original research with the potential to influence clinical practice. This includes studies evaluating novel diagnostic methods, therapeutic interventions, preventive strategies, and innovative approaches to infectious diseases management.

Preliminary Findings Addressing Important Research Questions

OFID encourages the submission of manuscripts that report on initial findings with the potential to drive further investigation and have a significant impact on the field of infectious diseases. Such papers should address important research questions and provide valuable insights into emerging areas of study.

Planetary Health

OFID welcomes manuscripts exploring the complex interplay between the natural environment and infectious diseases. Topics of interest include the impact of climate change, biodiversity loss, land-use changes, and other ecological factors playing a role in the risk, determinants, distribution, and severity of infectious diseases.

Publication Literacy

OFID invites submissions that aim to increase publication literacy among infectious diseases practitioners. These may include guides on infectious diseases statistics and research methods, concise summaries of infectious diseases trials, and articles addressing critical aspects of study design, data analysis, and interpretation of findings.

Global Health Topics

OFID actively encourages submissions that address infectious diseases from a global health perspective, particularly from authors based in low and middle-income countries. Manuscripts focusing on health disparities, resource-limited settings, infectious disease burden, and interventions to improve health outcomes in underserved populations are highly encouraged.

Supplements

OFID publishes supplements bringing together diverse groups of researchers around a topic of importance in clinical or translational infectious diseases research or clinical practice.

OFID Authors

OFID features work from a diverse range of authors, including infectious diseases clinicians, researchers, epidemiologists, microbiologists, public health experts, environmental scientists, and policymakers. The journal welcomes papers from early-career investigators and investigators from populations historically underrepresented in academic publishing. We particularly encourage authors from low and middle-income countries to contribute to the journal’s mission of addressing global health challenges.

OFID Readers

OFID is read by infectious diseases practitioners, including clinicians, researchers, and policymakers; professionals from related fields such as public health, environmental sciences, and global health; and others who seek evidence-based information to inform clinical decision-making, research, and policy development.

By providing a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas, Open Forum Infectious Diseases aims to drive progress in the field of infectious diseases, promote planetary health awareness, enhance publication literacy, and contribute to global health initiatives. We strive to create an inclusive and collaborative environment that fosters innovation, supports diversity, and improves patient outcomes worldwide.

IDSA Family of Journals

IDSA publishes the premier society journals in infectious diseases. IDSA’s family of journals includes:
Editor-in-Chief: Paul E. Sax, MD, is Clinical Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Clinical Infectious Diseases publishes practice-changing original research, reviews, guidelines, and perspectives that clinicians can use when caring for patients. CID covers the clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the full range of infectious diseases.
Editor-in-Chief: Cynthia L. Sears, MD, FIDSA, is Professor of Medicine, Oncology, and Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Microbiome Program Leader of the Bloomberg~Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy.
The Journal of Infectious Diseases publishes bench-to-bedside or bedside-to-bench translational infectious diseases science—patient- and disease-focused research featuring a laboratory component. It provides a home for authors writing about mechanistic and translational research, seeking to put this research into context for clinical and experimental scientists as well as clinician readers.
Editor-in-Chief: Roger J. Bedimo, MD, is the Chief of Infectious Diseases Section at the VA North Texas Health Care System and Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
Open Forum Infectious Diseases is a fully open-access journal that advances the field of infectious diseases by promoting the dissemination of high-quality research and fostering collaboration among practitioners, researchers, and policymakers. OFID’s goal is to provide a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas, spanning from the lab to the clinic, ultimately improving patient care and public health outcomes.
