Abstract
Migration from one community to another often entails drastic changes in fact, for the individual it is likely to be one of life’s major changes. At the very least, migrants must learn to relate to new places and people, and even if their daily activities change minimally, adaptation must take place on many levelsbiological, psychological, sociological, and, perhaps, spiritual. Migration, therefore, is epidemiologically relevant (Wessen 1971). The greater the differences between one’s old and new settings, both as to status and as to what is expected of one, the more difficult the adjustment is likely to be, and the greater the possibility of dissonance and stress. And the fewer the resourcesof relatives and friends, of knowledge, and of material goodswhich the migrant brings from place of origin to destination, the more vulnerable and unaided he or she will be in coping with the new life-style and the new set of expectations.
