Abstract
One of the advantages of studying a small isolated island society is precisely that this smallness and isolation facilitate keeping track of the changing character of the population. But when such a population disperses through the comparative geographic vastness (268 676 sq km) of a structurally complex society such as New Zealand, difficulties are bound to increase. Tokelauans, like migrants to any foreign country, moved from place to place and from job to job as they sought to find their niche in an alien society. The logistics of tracking them as they scattered became increasingly difficult over the study period, and repeatedly taxed the ingenuity and endurance of the investigators.
