NYU Scholars

NYU Scholars includes tenured/tenure-track faculty from select participating departments.

NYU Scholars is an online tool that aggregates publication information from external sources, and ensures that data is trusted, comprehensive and accessible in real time.

Faculty can access NYU Scholars in a few ways:

1. Direct URL: nyuscholars.nyu.edu/admin/. If prompted, enter your Net ID and NYU Home Password
   
2. Publications tab within the UDW+ Grants Management Dashboard
   
3. NYU Scholars link within the Research Tab of NYU Home
   

The NYU Scholars Public Portal allows scholars as well as journalists, donors, and policymakers to find NYU faculty members who are working at the forefront of new areas of scholarly inquiry.

NYU Scholars automatically captures publication information from the Scopus database while allowing faculty and their proxies to correct and augment those data.

Project staff assembled initial publication lists for included faculty to replicate submitted CVs. Abstracts, interviews, submitted work, and conference presentations without evidence of a related publication are excluded.

Those initial lists are continuously updated by automatic additions from Scopus and faculty editing.

Scopus publication and citation data are automatically updated on a weekly basis. Faculty and their proxies may add publications manually at any time.

1. Login to NYU Scholars
2. From the Personal Overview page, click "Edit Profile..."
   
3. Add or edit your personal or professional information, including a picture.
   - If your name, start date and/or email needs to be modified, contact NYUScholars@nyu.edu
   - Titles are pulled from PeopleSync. If your title needs to be corrected, contact your
   Department Administrator, who should contact your HRO, to correct your title in PeopleSync.
4. Save
   

You can add:

• Press Clippings
• Research projects

To add any of the above items to your profile:

1. Login to NYU Scholars
2. Click Add new (large green button in the right-hand corner)
3. Select the item you wish to add, and complete the form.
4. Save
   

1. Login to NYU Scholars
2. Click Research output from the left-hand navigation bar
3. Search for and locate the publication.
4. Click on the publication link for more details.
5. Make the necessary edits. Most of the items will be editable. If you need to update a field that is not editable, please send an email to NYUScholars@nyu.edu who can make this change for you.
6. Save
   

You may add a publication either through manual data entry, importing as BibTex or RIS file, or importing from an online source such as WorldCat, ArXiv or Web of Science. Importing will create a richer record than manual data entry. See "How do I import a publication from other sources?" for details.
NYU Scholars will identify possible duplicates. See "How do I address duplicate publications?" for details.

If you wish to add the publication manually:
1. Login to NYU Scholars
2. Click Add new (large green button in the right-hand corner)
3. Select Research output
4. Pre-determined templates can be used for new research submissions. Select the
publication type.
5. Enter the date in the template.
6. Save

3. Select Research output
   
4. Select "Import from online source"
   
5. Select the database from which to import. You are able to import only from the listed databases.
   
6. Search for the publication.
   
7. Import 

If you are not able to locate the publication, you may enter in manually (see "A publication is missing, how do I manually add a publication?") or import as BibTex or RIS file.

You may also set-up an automatic import. See "How do I set-up an automatic import?"

Publications found in Scopus are automatically added to your data. You have the option of automating imports from some other sources including PubMed, Web of Knowledge and ArXiv. The system will attempt to screen out duplicates based on article ID numbers and the title, but this automation may result in duplicates you need to delete. To turn on automatic imports:

1. Login to NYU Scholars
2. Click Edit Profile from your Personal Overview page
   
3. In the pop-up window, select "Automatic search" from the left hand side menu.
   
4. Select which databases you wish to enable for an automatic search and import.
   
5. Save

If you notice duplicate publication records in your research output list, send an email with the publication details to NYUScholars@nyu.edu. These records must be successfully merged by NYU Scholars administrators or Scopus to insure a correct citation count.

• Missing publication: See "A publication is missing, how do I manually add a publication?"
• Publication wrongly included: See "How do I remove a publication wrongly included?".
• Incorrect or incomplete publication detail (such as title, authors, peer-reviewed status, journal or book detail): Edit the record. See "How do I edit my publication data?".
• Duplicate records: See "How do I address duplicate publications?".
• Affiliation and nationality of co-authors is not correctly identified: Edit the record. This is most likely for manually entered publications. See "How do I edit my research output?".

If a Publication was wrongly included in your profile, you may disclaim the content.

1. Locate the publication in your publication list.
   
2. Press the content-action symbol (gear-icon in the lower right-hand corner of publication).
3. Select “Disclaim content”. This will send a message to NYUScholars@nyu.edu for processing.
   

If you expect a publication to exist, but it is not listed in your publication list, you can search for it within NYU Scholars and "claim" the record.
Similarly, if you try to add an article already recorded by a co-author, NYU Scholars will warn you that there is a duplicate in the system. To claim the publication:

1. At the top of the Research output page remove the "My content" filter by clicking on the x next to it. You will then see all the publications in NYU Scholars.
   
2. Search for the publication you want to add to your list by typing in all or part of the title.
   
3. Once you locate the publication, press the content-action symbol (gear icon in the lower right-hand corner of a publication).
   
4. Select “Claim content”. This will send a message to NYUScholars@nyu.edu for processing.
   

1. Login to NYU Scholars
2. Search for the publication
3. Click on the publication link to open it
4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and locate the "Visibility" section that allows you to control access to the publication.
   
5. Change the "Visibility" selection to "Confidential" (or another option)
   
6. Save

2. Click on the "Research Output" section
   
3. At the bottom of the Research Output page, there are links to download the list as a:

• PDF
• Excel
• HTML
• RIS (RefMan)
• Word
• BibTeX

Currently, the feature to import Grants data into NYU Scholars is unavailable. However, you can download your CV into Word format and add your Grants information directly into your CV.

To view your Grants financials, access the UDW+ Grants Management Dashboard.

4. Select the item you wish to add, and complete the form.
5. Save

NYU Scholars reports Scopus citation counts.

1. Login to NYU Scholars
2. Click Research output from the left-hand navigation bar
3. Search for and locate the publication.
4. Click on the publication link for more details.
5. Metadata for the selected publication will display. Select "Metrics" from the left-hand navigation menu.
6. View either a "Graph" or "Data" for the citations per year.
   

1. Login to NYU Scholars
2. The Personal Overview page will display a summary of your research output. Beneath the Research output section, you will find a link to the total Scopus citations on the listed number of publications.
   
3. This link is drillable to a list of your publications, in descending order by citation count.
   
4. You may select a publication for details.
   

Faculty can see their h-index for Scopus publications included in NYU Scholars.

1. Login to NYU Scholars
2. In the Personal overview section, view the "My research" tab.
3. Under the "Research output" overview, you will see a link listing the number of Scopus citations for your total research output. Click the link.
4. Publication titles with Scopus citation counts will appear as a list. Scroll down the list, and locate the publication item that is highlighted in light-blue.
   
5. Your H-index will be featured by the publication item and affiliated citation count highlighted in light-blue.

3. Select Curriculum Vitae
4. Select either a Public, Private or NIH Biosketch CV
5. Add the desired sections and populate the content.
6. You may "edit" or re-organize sections as needed.
7. Save
   

When creating a CV, faculty can select from the following available formats: Short, Long, Standard, Author, Vancouver, APA or Harvard.  

1. Login to NYU Scholars
2. Click "Add new" (large green button in the right-hand corner)
3. Select Curriculum Vitae.
4. Select either a Public, Private or NIH Biosketch CV.
5. Follow prompts to populate CV with desired content from NYU Scholars profile.
6. Select "Create"
   
7. Once CV populates: hover cursor over the "Research output" section. Toolbar will appear on left, select "Edit".
8. Refer to the "Display" section, and choose desired CV format in"Format" drop-down menu.
9. Click "OK".
10. "Save" your CV.
    

Faculty can link their NYU Scholars and ORCID profiles. Linking allows faculty to import publication output details from NYU Scholars into ORCID.

1. Login to NYU Scholars
2. Go to the Personal overview tab
3. Click “Edit Profile”
4. In the ORCID section, click "Create or Connect your ORCID ID"
5. You will be directed to the ORCID site to authorize export of publication content from NYU Scholars into ORCID profile record. You can also create an ORCID profile if one does not exist.

You can authorize other people to work on your profile, but they must be added to NYU Scholars first. Send a request to the NYUScholars project team. We will add this individual as a "Trusted User" and you will be able to designate him/her as a proxy.

A faculty member may be assigned to any number of departments to recognize accommodate joint appointments and institute memberships. One unit must be designated his/her primary affiliation. Contact NYUScholars@nyu.edu to add affiliations.

2. Click "View Scopus Profile" link
3. In Scopus, select to "Get citation alerts" (in the upper right-hand side)
4. Login to Scopus

The Fingerprint Engine identifies key concepts in publications' titles and abstracts. The Fingerprint Engine mines this text using a variety of Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, identifies the concepts that define the text, and produces a semantic index, or fingerprint, of weighted terms that represents the text.

Faculty can turn the fingerprint feature off, and remove concepts in their own public profile.  

1. Login to NYU Scholars
2. Go to the Personal overview tab
3. Click “Edit Profile”
   
4. In the left-hand navigation bar, click “Fingerprints”
   
5. The option to turn on/off all fingerprints is now accessible.
6. Additionally, a list of all fingerprint concepts is visible and concepts can be deleted if desired (by hovering over the concept and clicking the red "x" to delete).
7. Save

When viewing Research Output in the NYU Scholars Public Portal, some publications will contain an Altmetric icon on the right-hand side. Clicking on this icon will display an Altmetric details page, showing the online attention and activity for the selected publication.  The Altmetric page will show a range of online conversations surrounding the publication, collected from social media sites, newspapers, policy documents, blogs, Wikipedia, and many other sources.

To help put the data in context, an Altmetric score has been given for each publication. The Altmetric score is a high-level measure of the quality and quantity of online attention that it has received. The scoring algorithm takes various factors into account, such as the relative reach of the different sources of attention.

Faculty can share a direct link to any preferred professional web sites including research laboratories, bio pages, think tanks, social media sites and more. When added to the NYU Scholars system, the link will display on your personal NYU Scholars Public Profile page.

1. Log into your profile and click on "Edit profile." 
2. The top section - Personal identification - includes the option to add links. Click "Add link" and add your URL, description, and link type. 
3. Click 'Create' and 'save' your changes. 
3. View your NYU Scholars Public Profile, and note the added icon (below profile picture area) which contains the newly added link(s).

Yes, all publications have a UUID and permalink identifier assigned at creation time. The easiest way to access and save a permalink is to directly copy the URL displayed in your browser when viewing an open publication record on the NYU Scholars Public Portal.
