Provost Emeritus

The Provost Emeritus serves as the Chief Science Mentor at NYU Shanghai, supporting the scholarly development of faculty and students in the areas of mathematics, the sciences, and technology; and strengthening relationships between NYU Shanghai and its partner, the East China Normal University, with government and other supporters in both China and the United States, and with other schools at NYU. The Provost Emeritus also serves as Special Advisor to the Dean of the Tandon School of Engineering, fostering collaborations between Tandon and other NYU units, and strengthening faculty recruitment and development.  

Dr. David W. McLaughlin served as the chief academic officer of the University from 2002 to 2016. Under his leadership, NYU greatly expanded its faculty, developed new programs in the US and abroad, and devoted significant resources to developing new spaces and opportunities for academics and research. The University's progress under Dr. McLaughlin is documented in A Recent Academic History.

Dr. McLaughlin is Silver Professor of Mathematics and Neural Science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (CIMS). He is an applied mathematician, whose recent work in visual neural science has focused upon computational models of the primary visual cortex. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. From 1994-2002, he was Director of NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences.

Dr. McLaughlin received a B.S from Creighton University, an M.S. from Indiana University, and a Ph.D. in Physics from Indiana University.
