The new Baghdady Fund will help malnourished children and mothers throughout the world by supporting the development of humanitarians skilled in international nutrition interventions and policies.
Georgette Baghdady, N03, has created an endowed fund in honor of her mother and late father at the Friedman School that will send interns across the globe.
The Virginia and Dr. Elie J. Baghdady Fund for Maternal and Child Nutrition will support one student internship at the master’s level each year focused on helping malnourished children and mothers in the developing world.
Internships are a requirement for many of the school’s students to help shape their career goals. However, travel and living expenses are often quite costly, especially for those traveling abroad to work with humanitarian organizations and communities in developing countries.
An active alumna, Georgette previously spearheaded the Dr. Elie J. Baghdady Memorial Fund, raising funds annually to honor her late father. From 2010 to 2016, 17 graduate students received support for internships across three continents, applying their nutrition expertise to programs that aim to understand and alleviate malnutrition.

Georgette initiated a fundraising campaign in 2017 to establish an endowed fund that has so far raised more than $50,000. More than 60 donors contributed generously to the fund.
The hope is that the endowed fund will continue to grow through additional donations, in order to generate a scholarship that can fully support an internship.
The fund’s current endowment level will generate an annual scholarship that will cover approximately one half of the cost of a summer internship. The Virginia and Dr. Elie J. Baghdady Fund for Maternal and Child Nutrition will award the first scholarship in the spring of 2020.
