Josh Hammer
Newsweek Senior Editor-at-Large And Host,
"The Josh Hammer Show"

The 45th president of the United States, who happens to be seeking that same office once again, is currently chained to a criminal courtroom four days every week. In that courtroom, he is restrained by a wildly over-inclusive and blatantly unconstitutional gag order and cannot legally comment on anyone involved in the case other than the judge and district attorney themselves. The judge's daughter is quite literally fundraising for her partisan clients based on the fact that her father could be the first judge to ever incarcerate a former president. The substantive legal theory is so flimsy that the district attorney's predecessor and the local U.S. Attorney's Office alike both looked into the same charges and opted not to pursue the case. Welcome to our American banana republic. For details, read my most recent column.

On the most recent episode of "The Josh Hammer Show," I unpacked the Democrat-Lawfare Complex's outrageous prosecutions against former President Donald Trump and specifically explained why the ongoing criminal case in New York City is so ludicrous. I also made my case for why Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) should be Trump's vice presidential pick (aside: here was my recent column making this same case) and praised University of Florida President Ben Sasse for his outstanding leadership amidst the raging pro-Hamas anarchy tearing countless American university campuses apart (aside: here was my recent column on this same topic). As always, we concluded with our signature rapid-fire "Hammertime" segment. You can listen to all episodes of "The Josh Hammer Show" at the Newsweek website or on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Some other recent highlights of mine from the past week include appearances with Maria Bartiromo, Steve Bannon, Dave Rubin, Jesse Kelly, Mike Slater, Mark Reardon, Newsmax 2, "Jenna Ellis Tonight," "Breitbart News Daily" on SiriusXM, the "Breaking Battlegrounds" radio show, and more. I also guest-hosted last Thursday, May 9 for Jason Rantz on "The Jason Rantz Show" on AM 770 KTTH (Seattle), and you can listen here to hour 1, hour 2 and hour 3 of the radio program in case you missed it at the time. To keep up with everything I'm doing, make sure to follow me on Twitter/X, Instagram, and Facebook. As a reminder, earlier this year I also launched a second (legal-themed) show, "America on Trial with Josh Hammer," with The First; you can subscribe and listen to daily episodes of that show on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Also, two very important additional updates. First, Newsweek Voices is now live and I am now putting out fresh bonus audio content every weekday, which we are calling "Josh Hammer Premium." This content is paywalled and only available for paying Newsweek subscribers. So make sure to subscribe to Newsweek here if you are not already doing so! Second, we also just rolled out my new Subtext chat, which you can read all about and sign up for here. It's only $2.99/month to subscribe to this brand-new private chat!

Our additional highlighted Newsweek op-eds from the past week includes selections from Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), Liel Leibovitz, Matt Brooks, Paul du Quenoy, and Kristan Hawkins.

The Making of a Banana Republic

It is a presidential election year and a leading candidate for president of the United States, who also happens to be a former president of the United States, is currently a criminal defendant chained to a dingy courtroom four days of the week—time that he should be spending interacting with voters out on the campaign trail.

That's terrible. But it's only the beginning.

The daughter of the presiding judge is a professional political operative for the presidential candidate's opposition party, and the candidate himself is subject to an over-inclusive and unconstitutional gag order. The George Soros-funded district attorney, who campaigned on a platform of prosecuting that candidate, only pressed charges after his own left-wing predecessor opted not to do so due to the blatantly frivolous nature of the case. One of the Soros-funded DA's subordinates curiously joined his team, just in time to prosecute the candidate, from a high-ranking perch in the Department of Justice that is headed by the candidate's chief political rival.
