Roy Keane admitted he was ‘delighted to be proved wrong’ as Manchester United lifted the FA Cup at Wembley, yet his post-match chat with Erik ten Hag proved to be a little awkward.

Former United captain Keane has been an outspoken critic of Ten Hag's side this season, with captain Bruno Fernandes one of the players he has constantly chastised.

Yet after Fernandes lifted the FA Cup following United’s impressive 2-1 win against Manchester City, Keane backtracked on his criticism of Fernandes as he suggested the Portuguese star deserved praise for his Wembley display.

“I’ve been critical of Bruno over the years but I’m happy to be proved wrong,' Keane told ITV Sport.

“His leadership today was outstanding. We’ve always mentioned how brilliant he’s been as a player but you know, I’m just pleased for the fans.

"It’s been a frustrating few months. Yeah we’re quick to criticise and Man City didn’t play well today but it’s about United today and you’ve got to enjoy these moments.

"Absolutely amazing. That was a proper Man United performance. They were dogged, they sat in, they played some good stuff going forward.

"They scored two goals and I think they had a bit of confidence coming into the game from their games against Newcastle and Brighton back scoring goals.”

Keane also gave his verdict on Ten Hag’s future at United, amid widespread reports that the decision to sack the Dutchman had been made before the FA Cup final win.

"We don't know if a decision has been made, we know the pressure the manager is under and the questions before the game,” he stated.

"It's always difficult when you are preparing for a cup final. In football you have to enjoy these moments, the staff, the players, the supporters. And then cross the bridge when it comes to it.

“The manager has done his job today. Beating Man City in a FA Cup final is an extra bonus. Fingers crossed they support the manager.”

Keane then got a chance to congratulate Ten Hag in person, with the Dutchman sparking a reaction from Keane as he suggested the Irishman “had trouble to manage a team” during his own coaching career at Sunderland and Ipswich.

Former Ireland captain Keane was quick to hit back as he said: “I won a Championship with Sunderland, come on. Give me some praise. Don’t be too harsh on me.”

The duo ended their touchline interview with a warm handshake.
