Joy for Jonathan as Afolabi marks Belgian debut with vital win in relegation battle

Jonathan Afolabi celebrates with his team-mates.

Jonathan Afolabi has enjoyed a winning start to life at his new club in Belgium as his debut saw relegation-threatened Kortrijk claim a first league win in 10 games.

Dubliner Afolabi completed a move to Kortrijk, bottom of the table in Belgium’s top flight, earlier this month and while boss Freyr Alexandersson said that the former Bohemians man would need time to bed in, he was given his debut in the first game following the winter break on Saturday, away to Standard Liege.

Afolabi came off the bench after 65 minutes, replacing Uruguayan Felipe Avenatti who scored the only goal of the game just before half time and the win ended a run of five straight defeats for Kortrijk, who remain bottom of the table.

Afolabi had an appeal for a penalty which was turned down.

The sides who finish in the bottom two in the 16-team league are relegated automatically with clubs finishing 13th and 14th entering a playoff to stay up.
