Cork native Jake O'Brien capped a fine season with Lyon by scoring in the French Cup final with PSG, but it wasn't enough to prevent his side falling to a 2-1 defeat.

O'Brien has made a huge impact with the Ligue 1 side and has attracted Premier League and Serie A interest after becoming a first team regular and helping his team leap forward from a relegation battle to securing qualification for the Europa League with a sixth place finish.

He was hoping for a dream ending to the campaign with cup final success but Lyon fell two goals behind in the first half. O'Brien rose to dispatch a set piece to the net ten minutes after the restart, but PSG did enough to get over the line in Kylian Mbappe's final game for the club.

Former Cork City and Crystal Palace defender O'Brien made a permanent move to Lyon after impressing with Belgian side Molenbeek, with American John Textor a key player in his progression. He owns Lyon and Molenbeek and has a 45pc share in Palace but he is currently trying to sell it and has been linked with a move for a controlling stake in Everton. Ironically enough, Everton are one of the clubs tracking O'Brien.

The physically imposing 23-year-old will now be hoping to make another step forward in his career by making an international debut in the forthcoming double header with Hungary and Portugal.
