Irish defender Andy Lyons will be out for a considerable length of time after his club, Blackpool, confirmed that he had suffered an ACL injury.

The Dubliner made his 25th appearance of the season for the club in Tuesday’s league game against Leyton Orient where he came on as a half-time sub but he was injured within minutes and was stretchered off. Following scans, manager Neil Critchley has stated that the outcome was bad for Lyons.

“We’ve had some bad news on Andy, unfortunately he’s suffered an ACL injury, which is a long-term one, so that’ll keep him out for a lengthy period of time,” Critchley said.

"One of Andy’s great strengths is his mental toughness, he plays with grit and heart, but we know as a club we need to make sure that he remains positive because it can be a lonely place being in the treatment room on his own. We need to make sure we look after and give him the time and the support he needs.

"I don’t want to speculate on exactly how long he’ll be out - everyone is different, but it’ll be lengthy. He’s at the early stages so we’re not thinking about that yet.”

The 23-year-old joined Blackpool from Shamrock Rovers in January 2023 and made his debut in an FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest, though Blackpool were relegated from the Championship at the end of that season.

He was on the verge of a move in the January window but Blackpool opted to retain him but he will now miss the remaining weeks of their push for promotion.
