League One strugglers Charlton Athletic have asked Dubliner Curtis Fleming to take temporary charge of the side after the sacking of boss Michael Appleton.

Fleming had only just joined the backroom staff with the London outfit, as first team coach, but after only two games working alongside the manager, Appleton was dismissed.

Charlton, who have had six permanent managers in the last three years, have started the process to find a new boss but Fleming will be in charge as caretaker, with fellow Dubliner Stephen Henderson, the club’s goalkeeping coach, also playing a role ahead of their first game against Blackpool on Saturday.

“Curtis Fleming will take interim charge, supported by Jason Pearce and Stephen Henderson. Curtis is a very experienced coach while Jason and Stephen have a real understanding of the club given their history as players at Charlton,” the club said.

“While appointing a new Head Coach is a key priority, we are also well aware that there is just over a week left in the January transfer window. We have already signed seven players this month and we are still looking to further strengthen the squad before the window closes next week.”

Fleming already has experience as manager on a temporary basis this season as he stood in as interim boss of Bristol City for one game, having previously worked as assistant manager for two years.

Meanwhile, Dan Connor’s spell as interim manager of League Two outfit Forest Green Rovers is over. The club’s goalkeeping coach was in charge for one game last weekend, following the sudden exit of Troy Deeney, the board have since appointed ex-Sligo Rovers manager Steve Cotterill.
