Munster will have an extra gear next season after they added Thaakir Abrahams to their ranks.

With Simon Zebo retiring and the Reds’ budget boosted by Antoine Frisch’s move to Toulon, Graham Rowntree has opted to sign the speedy South African from Lyon.

The Top 14 club were willing to let Abrahams go from his contract with a year to go as they want to add a French-qualified signing, but that shouldn’t dim down excitement among the Munster faithful at the addition of an elusive back who shone in the URC with the Sharks.

A former South African U-20 international, Abrahams scored five tries in four Champions Cup appearances this season and will give Munster something different in attack as he competes with Mike Haley for the No 15 shirt.

Munster are losing a couple of heavy hitters including RG Snyman and Joey Carbery this summer, but Abrahams is one of a number of new additions including Diarmuid Kilgallon and Tom Farrell from Connacht and Billy Burns from Ulster.

Meanwhile, former Munster flanker Daniel Okeke has linked up with Coventry in the English Championship for next season.
