There was no joy for the two Irish boxers in quarter-final action at the European Championships in Belgrade.

Paris-bound Olympian Dean Clancy (Sean McDermott BC, Leitrim) was beaten 5-0 in the 63.5kg light welterweight category by Azerbaijan’s Malik Hasanov.

In the featherweight 57kg division, Adam Hession (Monivea BC, Galway) lost by a similar margin to Russia’s Eduard Savvin.

Ireland now has four boxers, Kellie Harrington, Aoife O’Rourke, Niamh Fay and Shannon Sweeney left in the championships.

On Thursday they bid to upgrade their guaranteed bronze medals to at least silver when they compete in the semi-finals.

Prize money is on offer at the event with today’s beaten quarter-finalists Dean Clancy and Adam Hession picking up $1,000 (€935) as did Lisa O’Rourke who was unlucky to go down on split 4-3 decision in Tuesday’s welterweight quarter-final after a review.

The four girls who are through to the last four will each pick up $5,000 (€4,675) for winning bronze medal, but can upgrade to $10,000 (€9,351) if they win their semi-final with the gold medallists receiving $15,000 (€14,027) each.

Friday is a rest day at the tournament with the finals scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
