The president of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) Gerry O’Mahony is to step aside from his duties pending the outcome of a court case.

Mr O’Mahony is facing serious charges and appeared at a sitting of Dungarvan District Court in Waterford on May 15, 2023.

The IABA tonight issued the following short statement after the charges were reported: "The IABA has only just become aware of the subject matter of recent media articles naming Gerry O’ Mahony, president of the IABA, and his involvement in legal proceedings.

“Gerry O’Mahony has volunteered to step aside from discharging the duties of the president of the IABA, pending the resolution of those matters. This includes all domestic and international functions.

“We are mindful of each person’s presumption of innocence and shall be making no further media comment on this matter which is now before the courts.”

Mr O’Mahony’s initial court appearance was not reported at the time. The alleged offence took place more than a decade ago.

The case has been brought forward to the Circuit Criminal Court for trial by jury and the last mention of it was on May 27, 2024.

Mr. O’Mahony has had a lifelong involvement in boxing in his native Dungarvan and was elected president of the IABA in July 2022 after a period of turbulence in the association.

He was due to represent the IABA at next month’s Olympic Games at which a record-equalling 10 Irish boxers will compete.
