Electric car sales are down more than 19pc on last year despite an overall increase in new car sales. It seems the momentum driving growth has slowed but why?

Several factors are at play. The early adopters have embraced EVs by this stage, but mainstream buyers are hesitant to compromise on convenience, are more price sensitive and some are holding out for better technology. Many want the same ease of travel as petrol or diesel cars offer and are less forgiving of a patchy public charging network.
