Review: Renault’s Arkana has an SUV’s pedigree and a coupe’s curves, but can this mixed breed be a top dog?

The Renault Arkana comes in three trim levels: Evolution, Techno and Esprit Alpine

The concept of the coupe SUV is a curious one: an automotive mongrel blending a hatchback, SUV and coupe. While an SUV is a road-focused rugged vehicle with a hint of invincibility, a two-door with a slopping roofline has long been referred to as a coupe. Think of a coupe SUV as a chubby coupe on stilts or, as carmakers like to describe it, a coupe with added practicality.

Attaching a sloping roof to an SUV isn’t an original idea. BMW demonstrated with the X6 that they could create demand for something we never knew we needed. Baffled motoring critics may have questioned the point of a coupe SUV, but BMW showrooms worldwide resonated to the footsteps of eager customers.
