China, the world’s largest producer of electric vehicles (EVs), has set its sights on Europe and it is expected that as many as 10 new Chinese brands will launch in Ireland by the end of the decade. However, the global Chinese onslaught is not being viewed by all as a positive development. In the US, Donald Trump has promised if he wins the election in November, to impose a “100pc tariff” on cars made outside the US and has warned that otherwise it would be a “bloodbath” for the US car industry.

In Europe, the EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen launched an anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese EVs, stating: “Global markets are now flooded with cheaper Chinese electric cars. And their price is kept artificially low by huge state subsidies. This is distorting our market.”
