Lying is really an under-appreciated skill. As a child it is the first of the great sins you are told not to commit. ‘Lies make baby Jesus cry’, we say to our offspring, despite not being entirely sure if baby Jesus did ever get upset about these things as He was just a normal baby and not some super sentient space baby like the one in 2001: A Space Odyssey, who would definitely know if someone was lying or not via his network of large black obelisks throughout the galaxy which he used to listen in on everyone, much like modern-day space baby Jeff Bezos presumably does with the Alexa.

The message from our parents, and from society at large, is clear — lies are bad. But you grow up and then realise that actually lies are pretty great and are key to a functioning society.
