No matter how full-on the day has been with my two young boys, reading with them before bedtime is always a tonic. We like the ‘really highbrow’ stuff like Poo in the Zoo and the 13 -Storey Treehouse series. Recently, to mix things up, I read my four-year-old an old-fashioned fairytale.

It seemed fine until the story took a dramatic turn. Namely, the big bad wolf who eats a whole family of baby goats gets his stomach opened and a handful of hot rocks put in there as punishment. I thought, what the hell is this? A deleted scene from 2005’s Hostel? Trying to do the right thing, I edited it on the fly and left out the bad parts. “Er, the wolf and the goat worked out their differences, the end!” I beamed. My four-year-old didnt buy it for a second.
