In the aftermath of last week’s European and local elections, much was made of the difference between the actual outcome and the state of the parties suggested in opinion polls, including the Ireland Thinks series with the Sunday Independent. In particular, there was talk of a “polling error” in relation to Fianna Fáil. It requires scrutiny.

It is argued that our national polling averaged five points lower than the figure Fianna Fáil achieved in the local elections. So what happened?
