In the absence of any exit poll, it will take a few hours to get a handle on what’s happening in the local elections, and lunchtime tomorrow before the picture in the European elections starts to take shape.

But the parties will have their spin ready from early doors. Fine Gael will be hailing whatever happens as a sign of “new energy” from Simon Harris taking over as party leader and Taoiseach.
