Not so long ago, government TDs were quick to point out in any discussion on local elections that people vote in a particular way when they select their councillors, which can be very different from how they vote in a general election.

This has now become a Sinn Féin talking point as party members take to the airwaves to explain their party’s failure to make significant gains in Friday’s elections.
