There are approximately 135,000 farmers in Ireland and 33pc of those are over 65 years of age.

A high proportion have no successor willing to take an active role in the running of the farm, which means that a substantial cohort of farmers are at or nearing the point of contemplating a step back — or even a step out of farming. For the many people in that position, their exit strategy can be a daunting prospect.
