How this Sligo-based cafe owner began producing her own meat after inheriting a Cavan farm

Brid Torrades had never worked in agriculture but when her uncle left her a 40ac farm in Cavan she started a Dexter herd, whose meat she sells in her cafe. She also planted 29ac in native woodland – and was undaunted by her new neighbours’ opposition

Brid Torrades didn’t have any experience of agriculture when she inherited a 40ac farm from her uncle in 2019.

Having grown up in Dublin’s Malahide, Brid had never worked with livestock — she runs a café and wine bar in Sligo town with her French husband Marc — but says she always felt a connection to the Cavan farm her mother had grown up on, having spent her holidays there as a child.
